In 1983, <\/span>Preston L. Allen<\/span><\/a><\/span> had a peculiar encounter.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the freshman returned to his dorm at the University of Florida, a stranger struck up a conversation. Then, the man started following him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Allen turned left, the man turned left; if he turned right, the man turned right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was hot on my heels,\u201d Allen recalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the nervous teenager entered his dorm, he was met by his roommate.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo who\u2019s your friend?\u201d his roommate asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

The man took off, never to be seen again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Years later, when a<\/span> serial killer murdered five people in Gainesville<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Allen\u2019s roommate pondered: “Do you think it\u2019s that weird guy?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three decades later, Allen, now an English and creative writing professor at North Campus, used the ominous encounter as the genesis for his latest book, <\/span>I Disappeared Them: A Novel<\/span><\/i><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

The psychological thriller, published on April 2, follows Poe, a hardworking family man who was bullied\u00a0 as a child for being overweight and an orphan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now he protects kids from sadistic criminals\u2014by killing them himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

I Disappeared Them<\/span><\/i> seeks to answer the question: is a serial killer born or is he made by his surroundings?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am not the anti-hero type. I don\u2019t like them; I never root for them. And yet, I found myself being very sympathetic to this particular character,\u201d said Ellen Milmed, the assistant to the chair of the English Department at North Campus. \u201cReaders are going to see all kinds of people that they know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Allen\u2019s colleague, English professor Matthew Sagorski, who has read two of Allen\u2019s eight novels, believes <\/span>I Disappeared Them<\/span><\/i> adds a unique perspective to the serial killer genre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a dark and twisted book that\u2019s also touching and funny at times,\u201d Sagorski said. \u201cIt\u2019s a page turner.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To start the creative process,\u00a0 Allen harnesses the voices \u201cliving in [his] head.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I Disappeared Them <\/span><\/i>began as a collection of unpublished short stories in the 1980s called <\/span>The Unmentionables<\/span><\/i>. Nearly two decades later, Allen revisited them and realized Poe\u2019s character had potential for something deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to come up,\u201d said Allen of the novel\u2019s main character. \u201cHe was ready to play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 59-year-old professor began writing the novel in 1999 and completed it last December after submitting multiple \u201cfinal\u201d versions to his publisher.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor a writer, writing is more difficult than for everybody else,\u2019\u2019 Allen said. \u201cWe are mindful of every word, every sentence, every phrase we use. Most people can just sit down and write\u2014we can\u2019t. For us, writing is way too important for us to ruin it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Allen\u2019s 29-year-old son, Quinn, said his dad\u2019s latest work is not for the faint at heart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you read the book, there is a gray area of what is good and what is bad. My father writes in a very gray style. It\u2019s not the typical black and white, good guy bad guy,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cHe understands that real people are flawed and I feel like that\u2019s what really comes to life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
