When Wolfson Campus history professor Paul S. George retires this summer, he won\u2019t stop being an evangelist on a mission to teach people Miami history in and out of the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to know, I think, the history of a very unique and very important city,\u201d George said. \u201cIt\u2019s unique because of where we\u2019re located in the subtropics, unique because it was developed so late, unique because it is so international, unique because it has a highest percentage of immigrants of any major city of the world. And you need to know its history in order to understand how it\u2019s gotten from where it was 100 years ago to where we are today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

George is driven to impart that history because he says if people, especially newcomers, know Miami history, they can answer and understand the realities of Miami today. It is an area, he says, with a large immigrant community and some significantly impoverished areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a city of tremendous contrasts between wealth and poverty,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

George\u2019s classes are so popular that students are turned away every semester. He will teach his last Miami history class this coming Summer A semester, after working for 25 years as a full-time professor at the College. <\/span><\/p>\n

His work has had a broad impact.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMany people have become excited about Miami history,\u201d George said. \u201cMany people have become avocational historians. Friends of mine that are writing blogs on Miami history, they attend my class over and over again. They\u2019re always explaining things before or after class. It\u2019s interesting, we\u2019ve created a bunch of missionaries in a sense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His classes focus on Miami, Florida, United States and world history. <\/span><\/p>\n

Many students take George\u2019s classes out of sheer interest in the subject, not because it\u2019s a requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n

Elisa Cantero, a 21-year-old former student of George\u2019s, describes his lectures as something she will never forget. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter listening to Professor George\u2019s lectures, there\u2019s no way you can\u2019t be super interested in what he has to say,\u201d Cantero said. \u201cThe stories are so detailed and that makes what he says stick with you.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Cantero took the course after taking one of George\u2019s tours of the Miami River. <\/span><\/p>\n

George offers more than 100 tours of the Miami area every year, many of which can be accessed through the HistoryMiami museum<\/span><\/a>. HistoryMiami has sponsored George\u2019s tours since 1988. The <\/span>city tours program covers Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties.<\/span><\/p>\n

The stories he tells on his tours are endless. <\/span><\/p>\n

On a recent Saturday morning boat tour of Stiltsville, Key Biscayne and the Cape Florida Lighthouse, more than 50 people laughed at his anecdotes and asked questions. George peppered the narrative with time-hopping details.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to take a look at a very interesting shoreline, let\u2019s take a look right here. There\u2019s a really woodsy area over there and if you look at it closely you\u2019ll see two modernist-style homes and in one of the buildings was a desk that Napoleon Bonaparte used in Malcesine [Italy],\u201d George explained. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the Island Queen Cruiser that tours Stiltsville, George told the tour group that the once vivacious community was transformed into the seven houses that remain amidst the turquoise waters of Biscayne Bay. Stiltsville was known in the 1940\u2019s, 50\u2019s and 60\u2019s as a playground for wealthy and well-connected Miamians. He described how the aquatic outpost was once home to the now infamous Crawfish Eddies and Bikini Club. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to see the [Stiltsville] houses and think it\u2019s important to know the history of Miami,\u201d said Mariela Martinez who was visiting from Puerto Rico with her nine-year-old daughter Paula. \u201cIt\u2019s not the typical tourist attraction, the history is amazing and this tour has so much depth and substance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Academia was not a sure thing in George\u2019s early life. While attending Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame High School, George admits he wasn\u2019t the smartest person in his classes, but after taking a history class his senior year, he fell in love with the subject. <\/span>After graduating high school, George attended Miami Dade College and the University of Miami. He decided to pursue a history major his junior year in college.<\/span><\/p>\n

George left Miami to pursue his master\u2019s and doctorate degrees in history at Florida State University in Tallahassee. As he began to write his dissertation on Miami history, he also wrote articles and then novels about the subject as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a fascinating history,\u201d George said. \u201cIt was a tourist resort. It was the roaring \u201820s. The police were running amok. There was a huge real estate boom that was probably unprecedented for the eastern United States other than New York. Those were some of the things that jumped out…colorful characters, festivals all over the place. Center City was booming. By contrast, in the late \u201870s Center City had died in Miami other than a place to work. So it was amazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, George has taught at several universities and colleges, including Florida State University, Florida A & M University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Miami. Between 1997 and 2000, he held the Arthur Hertz Endowed Chair at MDC. <\/span><\/p>\n

He has been a full-time professor at the College since 1991. His classes consist of a combination of lectures and opportunities to learn outside the classroom as well as frequent tours, which take place at the locations where the history he is teaching originally took place.<\/span><\/p>\n

George is also the author<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>fifteen books and more than 200 articles and book reviews, including <\/span>Little Havana <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Along the Miami River. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Although George will be retiring, he hopes to come back to MDC to teach Miami history classes in the future. Even during his retirement he will continue giving numerous tours around Miami. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe College has afforded me to become a completely civil historian and it has been great,\u201d George said. \u201cI have learned the craft [of teaching] better than ever, and the College has helped me. It has been a marvelous experience. It has allowed me to teach Miami South Florida history and Florida history and four decades of college level teaching. My heart is a little bit heavy now that I am leaving.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
