His work <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/320.One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> landed him a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, and to this day, remains one of the most important political commentaries in Latin American literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It explores the history of Latin America through the fictional town of Macondo. Central to the story is the Buend\u00eda family, the founders of Macondo and a family that has a knack for repeating the previous generation\u2019s mistakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each generation makes a tragic mistake that sets a domino effect of a mess for the next generation to either fix or worsen. Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez uses the magical realism genre to create unique surrealist metaphors like ghosts, strange prophecies and floating women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The developments of the village of Macondo are told through imagery and symbolic moments that reference historical marks in the history of humanity and Colombia, like the beginnings of alchemy, the Age of Enlightenment, colonization and the Industrial Revolution. The nameless war in the book led by Coronel Aureliano Buend\u00eda&#8217;s rebellion against the government and the Catholic Church is a direct reference to the Colombian \u201cThousands Day War,\u201d in which the Liberal Party went against the government led by the National Party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quote by American anthropologist Ernest Becker perfectly summarizes the idea behind the bizarre, semi-realistic occurrences of the book: \u201cEverything that men do is religious and heroic, and yet in danger of being fictitious and fallible.\u201d The irony of magical realism is precisely that it emphasizes the absurdist aspects of the characters\u2019 desires. Ultimately, all their efforts to satisfy the Buend\u00eda\u2019s grueling feeling of emptiness are at risk of being in vain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the Buend\u00eda family, Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez highlights how actions motivated by the wrong intent eventually lead to their demise. Oftentimes while trying to prevent tragic prophecies or trying to elevate their stations, the Buend\u00edas would do exactly as predicted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an acclaimed masterpiece that proposes a magical realist\u2019s take on humanity\u2019s trajectory and nature. M\u00e1rquez references key moments of Colombia\u2019s history with a unique mysticism that makes O<em>ne Hundred<\/em> <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an immersive and thought-provoking read.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is history a chain of mistakes condemned to repeat itself unless someone chooses to learn from it and break it? Was the downfall of Macondo the morally bankrupt Buend\u00edas, outside exploiters or a fusion of both?
