When he was four years old, Harrison Hahne-Lum watched Spider-Man 2 for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The experience inspired him to create his first movie. It was shot with his father\u2019s flip-phone and\u00a0<\/span>featured stuffed animals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI loved rewatching it,\u201d Hahne-Lum said. \u201cI loved that it\u2019s like a moment in time captured forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Hahne-Lum\u2014a rising sophomore majoring in filmmaking at North Campus\u2019 <\/span>School of Entertainment & Design Technology<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014has graduated to bigger projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 7, the 19-year-old <\/span>won<\/span><\/a><\/span> Best Screenplay for his stop-motion short film, <\/span>A Swan Story, <\/span><\/i>at the <\/span>Las Cruces<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

International Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> in New Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Harrison is] always comfortable asking the tough questions, which I think takes a lot of people a long time to discover how to do,\u201d said North Campus film production professor Joshua Ellis, who taught Hahne-Lum this spring. \u201cHe\u2019s continuously trying to better himself and he’s done that since day one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A Swan Story<\/span><\/i> is a dramatic comedy that follows Sukaira, a blue origami swan who adopts a child and tries to find true love via speed dating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sukaira\u00a0faces rejection because she has a missing wing. However, after a fire breaks out and she saves the day, people start liking her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI guess you could say the message is that people should love you for who you are, for what\u2019s on the inside,\u201d Hahne-Lum said. \u201cIf they only come to you because you found recent success or fame, you should ignore them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Swan Story<\/span><\/i> runs for 15 minutes and 35 seconds and took 737 days to complete.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was shot using a Canon Rebel T7 and stop motion\u2014a film technique in which objects are moved between photographed frames to give the illusion of motion. It can take about 12-24 still images to create one second of animation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHarrison is a gifted student who demonstrates impressive attention to detail,\u201d said Thomas Demos<\/a><\/span>, who was Hahne-Lum\u2019s professor for two SEDT film courses this school year. \u201c[He has] the patience and determination required to produce a high-quality stop-motion animation film.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the start of the project, Hahn-Lum, who wrote, directed and edited the film,\u00a0 faced various obstacles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He originally planned to use a clay figurine with aluminum wires as the central character, but it broke once he started using it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So he pivoted to paper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI knew nothing about origami,\u201d Hahne-Lum recalls. \u201cI watched a bunch of tutorials online. Most of them are guys with big, ugly fat fingers holding it. The camera quality is so low and sometimes it\u2019s not even focused.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The animated flick, which was shot in a bedroom with no air conditioning, was filmed with a budget of $200, often requiring the film aficionado to improvise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He used stacks of toilet paper to uphold bounce boards, ramen noodle containers for storage and sheets with math homework scribbled on it as light diffusers.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Hahne-Lum, who started the film as a junior in high school, says his greatest challenges were learning how to edit and managing his time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt [was] kind of a lonely process,\u201d he said. \u201cI was just in a room by myself for hours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although he often considered giving up, Hahne-Lum, who is autistic and dyslexic, wanted to leave his mark.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to finally make a good film that people would enjoy, that people would laugh and cry [about],\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Swan Story <\/span><\/i>was shown at the <\/span>Hollywood Florida Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> last November\u2014where Hahne-Lum <\/span>won<\/span><\/a><\/span> an award for Best Animation Director\u2014and at the <\/span>Morc Comadori Animation Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> in Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It recently won Best Animation at the <\/span>Miami Web Series Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and will be screened at the <\/span>FilmGate Miami Film Festival<\/span><\/a><\/span> at the Silverspot Cinema on June 26.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hahne-Lum hopes to create a feature-length sequel to <\/span>A Swan Story <\/span><\/i>and one day become \u201ca big-time Hollywood director.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFilm is forever,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s like a permanent reminder of the mark you leave in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
