Wolfson Campus alumna Jennifer Suarez has been <\/span>named<\/span><\/a><\/span> a Guistwhite Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The honor, which comes with a $5,000 prize, recognizes academic excellence, leadership and community service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eight students were selected from a pool of 3,000 applicants nationwide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to shape our youth, to be good and understanding people for the better of our society and future,\u201d Suarez said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 19-year-old, who graduated from the Honors College with an associate’s degree in English literature in April, served as the president of PTK at Wolfson Campus and president of Miami Dade College\u2019s Model United Nations this school year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of MDC, Suarez volunteered at <\/span>Guitars Over Guns<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a non-profit organization aimed at mentoring youth in low-income communities through music and interned at the <\/span>Children\u2019s Defense Fund<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a non-profit organization that advocates for children\u2019s education and human rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Suarez, who was awarded the $5,000 Wolfson Campus Board of Trustees scholarship, will pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in English literature at Emerson College in Boston this fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
