Juan Antonio Gonz\u00e1lez remembers when the Freedom Tower was known as <\/span>el refugio\u2014<\/span><\/i>a Cuban refugee assistance center.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1969, a decade after his family\u2019s dairy business was seized by Fidel Castro\u2019s communist regime, his family immigrated to Miami, where they lived in a two-bedroom house with two other families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To offset expenses, they visited the Freedom Tower to get food and medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n

The then 13-year-old recalls shuffling through the dark, musty building, climbing down industrial-like stairs and waiting in line to receive<\/span> la caja del refugio<\/span><\/i>, which contained mystery meat, powdered milk, peanut butter, a block of cheese and a bottle of corn syrup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the beginning of the Gonz\u00e1lez family as Cuban-American,\u201d said Gonz\u00e1lez, now 67. \u201cIt was Mecca. It was magical. It was somewhere over the rainbow. It was all those cliches that we came to know once we mainstreamed in the United States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Gonz\u00e1lez family story is one of dozens being collected by Miami Dade College\u2019s Museum of Art and Design\u2019s Centennial Stories project, an<\/span> initiative gathering intimate audio\/video memories of the Freedom Tower in anticipation of its centennial in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Freedom Tower is perhaps the most iconic building in Miami,\u201d said Mar\u00eda Carla Chicu\u00e9n, the executive director of cultural affairs at MDC. \u201cIt is a historical landmark and understanding and learning about these stories is key to appreciating our shared history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Construction was funded in 1925 by former Ohio governor James Middleton Cox to house the <\/span>Miami Daily News<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Metropolis<\/span><\/i>, later known as the <\/span>Miami News<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Architecturally, the building parallels a Spanish Cathedral; its 289-foot height made it the tallest structure in the south at the time it was built.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the 1960s, it became known as <\/span>el refugio<\/span><\/i>, offering assistance to thousands of Cuban immigrants fleeing the communist revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the Freedom Tower, which was established as a National Historic Landmark in 2008, is home\u00a0 to MOAD and the offices of the College\u2019s Cultural Affairs Department, Miami Book Fair, Miami Film Festival and Live Arts Miami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was <\/span>closed last May<\/span><\/a><\/span> to undergo a <\/span>$26 million renovation<\/span><\/span><\/a> and is anticipated to reopen in July of 2025, according to MOAD executive director <\/span>Amy Galpin<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The revamped building will feature three main exhibitions: a two-floor showcase chronicling the Tower\u2019s history, a contemporary art exhibit honoring Cuban-American artist F\u00e9lix Gonz\u00e1lez-Torres and North America’s first-ever FIFA exhibit<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Centennial Stories will augment the museum\u2019s chapter on e<\/span>l refugio<\/span><\/i>.<\/span> So far, approximately 20-30 testimonials have been collected, each averaging about an hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The stories will be played audibly on directional speakers to guide people through the multimedia presentation. It will feature photographs, videos and artifacts such as passports, letters and a recipe booklet created with food items offered at e<\/span>l refugio<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Full-length testimonies and transcripts will be available in the <\/span>College Archives<\/span><\/a><\/span> and on <\/span>Bloomberg Connects<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a free app that provides guides to museum exhibitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to hear directly from people\u2014to create a historical record that reflects myriad voices,\u201d Galpin said. \u201cHonoring people\u2019s individual experiences and learning about their personal journeys [is] essential to our shared humanity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Some stories have been recorded in the podcast room at West Campus, while others have been filmed at North Campus\u2019 MDC-TV studio and Wolfson Campus\u2019 Tuyo restaurant, which has a view of the Freedom Tower.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I have found is that even though something happened over 60 years ago, these memories are still very real and very present and very emotional,\u201d said MDC archivist Ren\u00e9 Ramos, who is conducting the interviews for the testimonial project. \u201cIn some cases it seems like the memories have only become stronger and more emotional for people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zoila De Yurre Fatemian, the director of Learning Resources at Wolfson Campus, remembers going to the Tower when she was seven years old with her father, Victor, who volunteered as a translator and guide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[The Freedom Tower] is part of history. It\u2019s part of the culture here in Miami. It was a significant time, a defining time [where] so many people changed their lives,\u201d said De Yurre, who gave her testimonial in March. \u201c[Knowing] that I was part of that, even helping to put a piece of cheese in a box, it\u2019s a good feeling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Testimonials, which will be edited by <\/span>Local Projects<\/span><\/span><\/a>, an exhibition design and consulting company, are being collected through the end of June.
