Wine Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team led by Miami Culinary Institute sophomore <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-culinary-institute-student-aims-to-be-the-dj-khaled-of-latin-cuisine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christian Barruos-Brens<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was awarded the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangebowl.org\/obfw\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 People\u2019s Choice Award for Best Dessert<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the Orange Bowl Food &amp; Wine Festival on April 12.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brens\u2019 Cafecito Brownie\u2014a chocolate confection augmented by coffee-flavored ganache, coquito whipped cream and a shot of cold coquito on the side\u2014took home the prize.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of MCI chef instructor Rowan Finley-Jacobs, MCI student Emma Ojito and Barruos-Brens\u2019 mother Celeste Brens, he prepared 1,000 brownies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWinning this award meant a lot, it meant all that work paid off,\u201d the 20-year-old said. \u201cIt&#8217;s the story of my brownie and how I came to be where I am now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The celebration, held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel &amp; Casino in Hollywood, Florida, featured culinary competitions and food and beverage tastings from more than 30 of South Florida\u2019s finest chefs and restaurants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barruos-Brens started selling brownies in 2018 through <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/moonlightsweets__llc\/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D%5C\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight Sweets<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, his home baking business, to help his mother, who was battling thyroid and breast cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His Cafecito Brownie, which also won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easterseals.com\/news-and-stories\/press-releases\/easterseals-south-florida.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Golden Plate Award for Best Dish (Sweet<\/span>)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Easterseals South Florida\u2019s 33rd Annual Festival of Chefs in January, pays homage to his father Fernando Barruos\u2014a Cuban coffee aficionado\u2014who died during Barruos-Brens\u2019 senior year of high school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A team led by Miami Culinary Institute sophomore Christian Barruos-Brens was awarded the 2024 People\u2019s Choice Award for Best Dessert during the Orange Bowl Food &amp;
