What do you think of when you hear the word jazz?<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the image of a hazy jazz bar pops up, or the faces of legendary figures like Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a common misconception that jazz is too sophisticated or mature for the younger crowd\u2014something that is great for a cocktail party, but not for radio. However, a certain 25-year-old musician is adding her own twist to the genre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Laufey L\u00edn Bing J\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir, better known as Laufey, has been taking the music world by storm with her pop-infused jazz melodies. In an interview with Ammar Kalia, a music critic from <\/span>The Guardian<\/span><\/i>, Laufey describes her music as having \u201c<\/span>older inspirations but [where] the lyrics are very modern<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her debut album, <\/span>Everything I Know About Love<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> (2022), is based on her college years and what she has learned about independence, love and relationships. It romanticizes everyday life and serves as a coming of age album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>Bewitched<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> (2023), that hopeless romantic grows up and is ready to celebrate all kinds of love. The single <\/span>From the Start <\/span><\/i>served as her first chart-topper; it\u2019s about having a crush on someone and dealing with those emotions. Less than a month after the album\u2019s release, it was<\/span> No. 23 on the Billboard 200<\/span><\/a><\/span> and won a <\/span>Grammy<\/span><\/a><\/span> for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in February.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Laufey later released <\/span>Bewitched: The Goddess Edition<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> (2024) with three bonus tracks.<\/span><\/p>\n

What separates <\/span>Bewitched <\/span><\/i>from <\/span>Everything I Know About Love <\/span><\/i>is that Laufey takes more risks. She embraces her roots as a classical musician by including more orchestral melodies that compliment her staple jazz-pop sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the track <\/span>Letter to My 13 Year Old Self<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>,<\/span> Laufey taps into self-love, telling her younger self to not give up because a career in music awaits her. The Icelandic-Chinese singer also addresses her childhood insecurities with lyrics such as \u201cI’m so sorry that they pick you last\/ <\/span>try to say your foreign name and laugh\u201d and \u201c<\/span>life is prettier than it may seem<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The orchestral compositions combined with the jazzy beats and pop lyrics add a whimsical, dream-like quality to her songs. A personal favorite of mine is <\/span>Dreamer<\/span><\/i>. It has nostalgic harmonies and optimistic undertones as Laufey proclaims, \u201cno boy\u2019s going to kill the dreamer in me.\u201d Similarly, the songs <\/span>Bewitched <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Goddess <\/span><\/i>have an emotional rawness that help you feel the artist\u2019s vulnerability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Laufey is carving out her own place in the music industry. She\u2019s not a strict traditionalist or modernist and does not conform to trends.
