Four years ago, Fabiola Alfaro was having anxiety attacks and cutting herself with a blade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI used to hurt myself,\u201d Alfaro recalls. \u201cI used to not want to live.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So she turned to God for answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI reached out my hand into heaven [and] I was like \u2018Okay, God, grab my hand and get me out of here,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAnd life became all about him.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, the 20-year-old is living for God through fashion at Miami Dade College.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month<\/span><\/span><\/a>, Alfaro, who aspires to become a sister in a convent, debuted <\/span>Eukharistia<\/span><\/i>, a clothing collection honoring God, at Miami Fashion Institute\u2019s annual graduate event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The collection, named after the Greek word for thanksgiving, is inspired by Roman Catholic architecture and garments worn by clergymen during the Eucharist, a Catholic ritual commemorating Jesus\u2019 last supper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo use my talent for the thing that I love most in the world, which is God, that\u2019s the life I want to live,\u201d she said. \u201cI don’t want to waste my talents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alfaro\u2019s passion for designing traces back to her childhood in Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a five-year-old, she took \u201chours\u201d to get dressed and pretended to be a fashionista, designing clothes for imaginary customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

In December of 2020, Alfaro graduated from Saint Peter\u2019s High School and moved to Miami with her mother and stepfather to pursue her dream. There was only one problem\u2014she didn’t know how to sew.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn’t even know how to turn on the machine,\u201d she recalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That changed once Alfaro enrolled at MFI in the fall of 2021. She quickly learned to sew seams and zippers, make patterns and construct garments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alfaro\u2019s dream also changed that year. She didn\u2019t just want to be a fashion designer\u2014she wanted to use her talents to serve God and began fixing nuns\u2019 garments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI read this scripture in the Bible that says, \u2018The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Pray to the owner of the vine to send more workers,\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cThat moment was very personal; it was like God telling me, \u2018I want you to be my servant in my vine.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Through that inspiration, <\/span>Eukharistia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0was born. It consists of three dresses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The crown jewel of the collection is <\/span>Eukharistia<\/span><\/i>\u2014a white gown adorned with bishop sleeves and a black mozzetta\u2014an elbow-length cape worn by Catholic dignitaries. The piece also features a long, gold cross with a spikey centerpiece inspired by a monstrance\u2014a vessel containing the sacramental bread eaten during the Eucharist.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exousia<\/span><\/i>, Greek for authority, is a white gown augmented by black, bell-shaped sleeves, a gold collar, a cross-shaped seam, and a long tail inspired by a mitre, the ceremonial hat worn by bishops and the Pope. It aims to represent authority figures in the Catholic Church.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Leitourgia<\/span><\/i>, Greek for liturgy, is a black gown that features a thick, gold collar, white cape and knotted cord above the waist. The piece seeks to honor nuns and priests and their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe made this for God and dedicated it to him,\u201d said Stephanie Duque, Alfaro\u2019s friend and classmate. \u201cThe fashion world sometimes hides [religion] because a lot of people have different opinions, but I\u2019m really glad that [she was]\u00a0 able to show that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, Alfaro is interning at <\/span>Jesunme<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014an online clothing store owned by Desirae Allen, an adjunct professor at MFI who taught Alfaro for Introduction to Fashion Design & Related Industries\u2014where she\u2019s sewing kimonos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s also working as an illustrator at <\/span>Lucky In Love<\/span><\/a><\/span>, an athletic wear store. In the future, Alfaro hopes to design garments for the pope.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud because she\u2019s sticking with her belief,\u201d Allen said. \u201cShe\u2019s a believer and there\u2019s nothing wrong with that, especially when other young people can see, \u2018Look, I can love God [and] I can still try to live a good life.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
