{"id":37642,"date":"2024-08-08T12:36:52","date_gmt":"2024-08-08T16:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=37642"},"modified":"2024-08-08T12:36:52","modified_gmt":"2024-08-08T16:36:52","slug":"olympics-nod-at-the-last-supper-sparks-outrage-among-christians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/olympics-nod-at-the-last-supper-sparks-outrage-among-christians\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympics Nod At The Last Supper, Sparks Outrage Among Christians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/paris-2024\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Games\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opening ceremony was a slap in the face to Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held every four years, the Olympics are an international multi-sport event featuring sports like marathon swimming, soccer and gymnastics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the games, which are taking place from July 26 &#8211; Aug. 11, are known for uniting millions of people, this year\u2019s opening ceremony sparked controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlights of the spectacle included Lady Gaga\u2019s performance of <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tbJlZZ87jFY&amp;t=156s\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mon truc en plumes<\/span><\/i><\/a> <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(My Feather Thing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and Celine Dion\u2019s emotional rendition of <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=smKqMiGXxl4\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L&#8217;Hymne \u00e0 l&#8217;amour<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Hymn to Love)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the ceremony also featured a scene resembling Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Supper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mural painting depicting Jesus Christ\u2019s last meal with his 12 disciples, leaving millions outraged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The performance, which is conveniently difficult to find online, showcased d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rag queens and members of the LGBTQ+ community<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dancing to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c7a balance pas mal \u00e0 Paris <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Swing Isn\u2019t Bad In Paris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) alongside a long table that eventually turned into a runway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French DJ and lesbian activist Barbara Butch, who is <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c0xj358y7n5o\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing online harassment and death threats<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was featured at the center of the table wearing a silver headdress that many said resembled a halo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the climax of the performance, a large food cover was lifted, revealing French singer-songwriter Philippe Katerine barely clothed in flowers while singing the song <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naked<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). He later became known as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/07\/29\/style\/video\/apology-blue-man-olympic-ceremony-digvid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the semi-naked blue man<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 3, the Vatican issued a <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2024\/08\/03\/240803d.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stating, \u201cAt a prestigious event where the whole world comes together to share common values, there should be no allusions ridiculing the religious convictions of many people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspire.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">C Spire<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an American telecommunications and technology company pulled their advertisements from the Olympics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will not be a part of the offensive and unacceptable mockery of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Supper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Suzy Hays, the CEO and president of C Spire, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wjtv.com\/video\/c-spire-pulls-ads-from-2024-olympics-here%e2%80%99s-why\/9908485\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a statement<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, others have defended the performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/s9UWjLw1Jz8?si=G1dyGIMCNg9XackT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BFMTV<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a French media outlet, bearded drag icon Piche, who participated in the performance, said, \u201c[<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Supper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] is something that has been used and reused in pop culture for decades by everyone and that has never posed a problem, [but] the moment it&#8217;s queer and drag queens who do it, it poses a problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Olympic Committee and Thomas Jolly, director of the games\u2019 opening ceremony, apologized but denied allegations that the performance was meant to resemble <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Last Supper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jolly <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/video\/x931d5e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told BFMTV<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the act was inspired by the Dionysia, a festival honoring the Greek god of fertility, wine and pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the IOC should have considered how offensive the similarities between the opening ceremony and da Vinci<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work could be to Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a society that is politically sensitive to race, gender, sexual orientation and yes, even religion.
