Venezuela is witnessing one of the biggest opposition movements in its history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Consejo Nacional Electoral<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Venezuela\u2019s electoral council, declared Nicol\u00e1s Maduro president for his third consecutive term.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2013, <\/span>Maduro<\/span><\/a><\/span> has spearheaded Venezuela\u2019s socialist movement, nicknamed <\/span>Chavismo<\/span><\/a><\/span> after <\/span>Hugo Ch\u00e1vez Fr\u00edas<\/span><\/a><\/span>, who pioneered the movement and was president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout Maduro\u2019s tenure, the country has experienced poverty, hyperinflation and the emigration of millions of Venezuelans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maduro\u2019s biggest problem, however, is not the country\u2019s physical state, but his unwillingness to step down after citizens rejected Chavismo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, more citizens than ever voted against Maduro, including areas that have historically been pro-Chavismo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mar\u00eda Corina Machado<\/span><\/span><\/a>, leader of Venezuela\u2019s opposition movement, was originally the party\u2019s lead candidate after she won<\/span> primary elections with 92.35 percent of the vote<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, in June of 2023, <\/span>the government banned Machado from holding office for 15 years<\/span><\/a><\/span> for allegedly promoting international sanctions against Venezuela and supporting ex-political leader Juan Guaid\u00f3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That led to the appointment of <\/span>Edmundo G\u00f3nzalez Urrutia<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a former Venezuelan ambassador to Argentina and Algeria. He led campaigns with Machado urging Venezuelans to show their will by voting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On July 28, Urrutia won the election <\/span>with 7,156, 462 votes, while Maduro only had 3,241,461 votes<\/span><\/a><\/span>, proven by 81.70 percent of the voting receipts, which are public to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The dictatorship is denying the loss and the CNE claims Maduro won with <\/span>51.2 percent of the popular vote<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Voting centers were corrupted by the CNE, as board members <\/span>would not allow citizens to enter to vote<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Federal employees, such as \u201ccolectivos,\u201d far-left armed groups, were also seen <\/span>stealing<\/span><\/a><\/span> ballots, adding votes and <\/span>preventing<\/span><\/a> witnesses of the opposition movement from receiving final tally sheets<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014a constitutional right that validates the elections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, citizens have <\/span>gone to the streets to protest<\/span><\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The government has responded with the same oppression they have exhibited in the past 20 years, resulting in <\/span>16 deaths and more than 1,200 citizens<\/span><\/a><\/span> being detained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even a 13-year-old girl has been subject to persecution, <\/span>receiving six years of prison time for acts of \u201cterrorism”<\/span><\/a><\/span> even though she was not involved in the ongoing protests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, the whole world has witnessed this electoral fraud. Venezuelans, along with countries like the <\/span>United States<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Argentina<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>El Salvador<\/span><\/a><\/span>, have pointed out the shameful act.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not a fight between two political parties. It\u2019s a fight against immorality. <\/span>A government that spills the blood of its citizens does not represent democracy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Urrutia is the elected president of Venezuela. Denying this fact is keeping the country captive. Families are being destroyed<\/span> and if we don’t solve the problems of today, they will affect the children of tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of\u00a0 the data used in this column is from social media platforms because Venezuelan media outlets are run by the government and offer only the regime’s point of view.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
