Artificial intelligence is transforming reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Robotic arms are being used in manufacturing. Virtual assistants are being implemented in hospitals to detect illness. AI facial recognition is being used to identify criminals.<\/span><\/p>\n

This month, <\/span>EnTec<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the School of Engineering, Technology and Design at Miami Dade College is joining the AI trend, launching Florida\u2019s first <\/span>bachelor\u2019s of science degree in applied artificial intelligence<\/span><\/a><\/span> at North Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAI is going to be embedded in everything we do, so we [need to] make sure students know how to think critically, use it in an ethical manner and that we\u2019re able to have education programs that teach it,\u201d said College President Madeline Pumariega during last month\u2019s Board of Trustees meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 120-credit program, which costs approximately $15,500, aims to teach students how\u00a0 artificial intelligence can be applied to the real-world and meet the increasing demand for jobs in the emerging industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Salary.com, artificial intelligence developers earn between <\/span>$85,000 to $133,000 annually<\/span><\/a><\/span> and approximately <\/span>97 million new jobs in AI<\/span><\/a><\/span> will be created by 2025, World Economic Forum reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Courses, which will be in-person and blended, include: Machine Intelligence, Applied Decision and Optimization Theory, <\/span>AI and Ethics<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and an AI Capstone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students will learn about natural language processing\u2014technology that allows computers to interpret and manipulate human language\u2014the social repercussions of AI through lectures, hands-on projects and internship opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAI touches everything,\u201d said Manny Perez, dean of EnTec & Design. \u201cIt can be used for good or bad, but it\u2019s important to understand how to use it and how to apply it. That\u2019s what our program is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Applicants must have completed an <\/span>associate\u2019s degree<\/span><\/a><\/span> and prerequisite courses\u2014AI Thinking, Machine Learning Foundations, Introduction to Natural Language Processing and Introduction to Python Programming\u2014and have at least a 2.5 GPA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Students who have earned the <\/span>AI Awareness<\/span><\/a><\/span> and <\/span>AI Practitioner<\/span><\/a><\/span> college credit certificates can apply credits obtained toward the bachelor\u2019s program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those with financial need may qualify for <\/span>aid<\/span><\/a><\/span> such as the Javier Coto Scholarship, City of Miami Residents Scholarship, FPL Tech Scholarship and the <\/span>Rebooting Through Emerging Technology Program<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014which awards 20 students with $10,000 toward annual tuition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want people to be afraid of [AI]. We want to show how [it] can truly enhance life and make things a lot easier,\u201d said Anselm Knights, chairperson of EnTec & Design department at North Campus. \u201cWhy not have a machine do [mundane tasks] for you while you\u2026put your time and effort into something more meaningful versus doing a task that\u2014no pun intended\u2014has you looking like a robot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
