When Alegr\u00eda Lopez graduated from Miami Southwest Senior High School last summer, she didn\u2019t want to go to college.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite having a passion for environmental conservation, the then 17-year-old, who suffers from anxiety, didn\u2019t know what to major in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe constant reminder of \u2018there\u2019s so much to do\u2019 paralyzes me and makes me not want to do anything because I\u2019m like\u2014\u2019Where do I start?\u2019\u201d Alegr\u00eda said. \u201cAfter graduation, I needed to take a break from school and think about what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, her mother\u2014Kimberly Ann Veber-Lopez\u2014wanted Alegr\u00eda to seize the moment, but she realized the message was hypocritical because she dropped out of college in 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere I am telling her, \u2018look, you need to go to school, you need to do this, do that,\u2019 but I didn\u2019t finish,\u201d recalls Kimberly, who attended North and Kendall campuses. \u201cHow serious is she going to take me?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the 47-year-old proposed this plan: they would attend classes together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last spring, Kimberly and Alegr\u00eda enrolled at Kendall Campus to pursue an associate\u2019s degree in environmental science and business administration, respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The duo took intro to computer technology and applications and psychology of personal effectiveness. This summer, they signed up for earth science and U.S. history.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, this is for her, it\u2019s not for me,\u201d Kimberly said. \u201cAnyday, I could be gone, but the decisions she makes [are] what\u2019s going to dictate her future. She has to be vested in her future for herself, not for me or anyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The computer course has been the most challenging because it required understanding of terms like pixelization and RAM memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018holy crap, what did we get ourselves into?\u2019\u201d Kimberly recalled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being mother and daughter, their study habits and personalities differ drastically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Kimberly\u2014who is a wife, mother of three and a foster care recruiter at <\/span>Citrus Family Care Services<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u2014organization and timeliness are key. She\u2019s a social butterfly and a note-taker who uses pens, highlighters, sticky notes and checklists.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alegr\u00eda is an introvert. She\u2019s an auditory\/visual learner who \u201cloves to procrastinate\u201d and seldom takes notes. However, her mom’s proactive nature has inspired the 19-year-old to become a better student.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince she has the mindset to get things done, [she\u2019s] able to give me warnings about assignments\u2026she doesn\u2019t have the fear that I do of \u2018where do I start?\u2019 She just starts,\u201d Alegr\u00eda said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even their fashion tastes and mannerisms differ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In class, Kimberly\u2014who typically wears blouses, skirts and sneakers and has her hair in a bun or ponytail\u2014sits upright, paying attention to lectures \u201clike a soldier.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alegr\u00eda, on the other hand, opts for shark slides, yoga pants and T-shirts and sports her curly hair down. She often leans against the wall or stretches her feet onto a chair\u2014until her mom gives her the side-eye.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pair doesn\u2019t study together often, but they hold each other accountable. During their psychology course, they competed to see who finished assignments faster and earned a higher grade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be nice to have that sort of closeness, [where] your daughter\u2019s chill with you being in a learning environment with your peers,\u201d said Kendall Campus professor Ximena Barrientos, who taught the earth science course they took.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>This fall, they are taking introduction to communications together.<\/span><\/p>\n

After completing their degrees, Kimberly plans to transfer to Florida International University to pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree in communications and public administration, while Alegr\u00eda hopes to start working in the environmental field.<\/span><\/p>\n

But for now, one thing is certain\u2014Alegr\u00eda is capable of keeping the pact she made with her mom when they started taking classes together last spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been able to prove, without me prompting her, that she\u2019s comfortable going up to a professor and asking for clarification for something, so I don\u2019t have any doubt in my mind that she\u2019ll continue doing that, whether she\u2019s with me or not,\u201d Kimberly said. \u201cThat was the whole goal; yes, we\u2019re mother and daughter, but this is hers. She has ownership of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
