Thursday was a full circle moment for Michael Hitchcock.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1979, Hitchcock helped Miami Dade College\u2019s men\u2019s soccer program secure a national title. Four years later, the team captured a second championship.<\/span><\/p>\n

But despite that success, the squad was dismantled in 1990\u2014a move Hitchcock called \u201cheartbreaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly 35-years later, with Hitchcock in attendance, MDC welcomed its soccer program back and the Sharks did not disappoint, defeating the nation\u2019s top-ranked team, Monroe College, 1-0 at Kendall Campus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s awesome to see [the program] come back,\u201d the 64-year-old said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sporting white uniforms with gray sleeves and blue pinstripes on the side, the Sharks and their goalkeeper Samuel Cavo, withstood an array of scoring attempts by the Mustangs in the final 10 minutes<\/span>\u2014<\/span>including their best shot at the 86th minute mark<\/span>\u2014<\/span>to defeat Monroe College, who has won back-to-back national titles.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI scored the first goal in 35 years for MDC,\u201d said Edoardo Duchini. \u201cTwo days ago, I wished to score a goal here, so when I [did], it was a fantastic moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The game was held in front of more than 300 spectators on the auxiliary field at Kendall Campus because the school\u2019s <\/span>$5 million sports <\/span>stadium<\/span><\/span><\/a>, which has been under construction since March, has faced delays.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because it has rained so much in Florida, the delivery of the field\u2019s turf was postponed until gameday. The field\u2019s water pump also has not arrived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior Director of Campus Administration Cristina Mateo said the field, which was originally scheduled to be ready by August, will be completed by October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to kickoff, a tailgate was held next to the grassy area near the school\u2019s basketball gymnasium. Members of Kendall Campus\u2019 Student Government Association handed out hamburgers and hot dogs grilled by Campus President <\/span>Bryan Stewart<\/span>.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Administrators, faculty, staff and athletes from the College\u2019s volleyball, baseball, softball and basketball programs attended the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a team. Even though they are soccer [players], we are Miami Dade College athletes; we are one body and we need to support each other,\u201d said head volleyball coach Origenes \u201cKiko\u201d Benoit, who hours earlier saw his team defeat 4th ranked Salt Lake Community College 3-0 in their season opener in Boca Raton.<\/span><\/p>\n

The starting lineup featured: goalkeeper Samuel Cavo; defenders Agustin Sinelli, Jeremy Levivier, Agustin Bezara, Facundo Ochoa, Jesus Colazo and Guilherme Soares Martins; midfielders Kyle Reid, Eduardo Cornejo and sophomore Gabriel Obletter; and forward Alejandro Cumplido.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the game, they were serenaded by fans with \u201clet\u2019s go Sharks\u201d chants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At halftime, <\/span>Athletic Director Mike Balado<\/span><\/a><\/span> and College President Madeline Pumariega honored players from the 1979 national championship team. Each player received a white dri-fit polo shirt featuring the MDC Sharks\u2019 logo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTonight\u2019s a legacy night\u2014the legacy that you all created and left for us to follow,\u201d Pumariega said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sharks\u2019 next game is on Aug. 31 versus Hill College in Brenham, Texas. In total,<\/span> the team will play 15 regular season games<\/span><\/a><\/span> this year, but Thursday’s victory will be the one they will remember forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all dreamed of winning this first match,\u201d said Sharks\u2019 forward Alejandro Cumplido.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTES<\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/strong> In other news, the women\u2019s soccer team<\/span>\u2014<\/span>the first in the College\u2019s 63-year history<\/span>\u2014started their season by <\/span>defeating Angelina College 5-3 on Thursday in Tyler, Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
