{"id":37803,"date":"2024-08-27T11:42:15","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T15:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=37803"},"modified":"2024-08-30T16:17:10","modified_gmt":"2024-08-30T20:17:10","slug":"home-ownership-remains-a-far-fetched-dream-for-millennials-gen-z","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/home-ownership-remains-a-far-fetched-dream-for-millennials-gen-z\/","title":{"rendered":"Home Ownership Remains A Far- Fetched Dream For Millennials &#038; Gen Z"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On paper, millennials\u2014people born between 1981 and 1996\u2014and Gen Z\u2014individuals born between 1997 and 2012\u2014are projected to do better economically than their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, what\u2019s on paper often fails to tell the whole story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, younger Americans own <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stlouisfed.org\/institute-for-economic-equity\/the-state-of-us-wealth-inequality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$1.28 for every $1.00<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held by baby boomers (adults born between 1946 and 1964) and Gen X (adults born between 1965 and 1980).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you speak to young folks, you\u2019ll likely hear about debt, economic hardship and a dwindling sense of hope for their financial future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reason for this is the stagnant minimum wage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, the federal minimum wage was <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/business\/labor\/annual-federal-minimum-wage-rates-1955-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 percent less than the federal minimum wage in 1973 when adjusted for inflation<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This decrease in spending power has made it more difficult to achieve economic milestones, such as owning a home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Rob Warnock, a senior research associate at Apartment List, an online marketplace for apartment listings, in 2019,\u00a0 the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apartmentlist.com\/research\/homeownership-by-generation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homeownership rate<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among millennials was 43 percent compared to Gen X\u201467 percent\u2014and baby boomers\u201477 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the subprime mortgage crisis in 2009, down payments and lending requirements increased to avoid similar calamities, which made it more difficult to purchase homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A decade later, the coronavirus pandemic blew the doors of the housing crisis wide open, once again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between April of 2020 and April of 2021, the United States saw the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/how-us-housing-prices-changed-during-the-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average price of homes rise by 16 percent<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the largest rise since 1992\u2014with some areas seeing increases of up to 20 percent, according to data from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the federal minimum wage has stayed the same since 2009, owning a home has increasingly become farther out of reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education, coined by Horace Mann as \u201cthe great equalizer,\u201d has historically improved Americans&#8217; economic outlook, as higher levels of schooling traditionally translated to higher levels of income.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the price of getting a degree has skyrocketed to absurd levels while wages have remained stagnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lendingtree.com\/student\/millennials-have-it-worse-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shannon Insler<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a personal finance writer who has written for outlets including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yahoo! Finance<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provides some insight in an article for<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lending Tree<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online lending marketplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWhen millennials were born, tuition at public four-year colleges was just $3,190 per year (adjusted for inflation),\u201d Insler said. \u201cBy the time they grew up and enrolled in college, tuition rose 213% to today\u2019s cost of $9,970 per year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This has forced college seekers to take on student loans and increase their debt, which has hampered mortgage savings and caused many young Americans to delay starting families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When assessing quality of life, wages, housing and education are interconnected.
