During the COVID-19 pandemic, <\/span>Carmen Mis\u00e9<\/span><\/a><\/span> and her 18-month-old daughter escaped the mundaneness of quarantine by recounting their daily adventures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oftentimes, the main character was their neighbor\u2019s mischievous cat, who frequently visited their yard and left lizards at their doorstep.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was challenging to be away from family, to just be home, and not be able to get out much\u2026but there was a silver lining in the pandemic,\u201d recalls Mis\u00e9, who is an English professor at North Campus. \u201cWe were able to spend a lot of time together, get creative.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Cat Almost Stole Mom\u2019s Car <\/span><\/i>spawned from that creativity; the story is the 37-year-old\u2019s first children\u2019s book.<\/span><\/p>\n

The literary endeavor, which comes in English and Spanish, was released this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think [it\u2019s] meaningful to finally reach the culmination of something I\u2019ve been working on for so long,\u201d said Mis\u00e9, who has previously published non-fiction essays and poems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Set in Biscayne Bay, the story follows Mis\u00e9\u2019s daughter Victoria and their dog Hamlet as they attempt to stop a fluffy-tailed feline named Oliver\u2014who was abandoned by his family\u2014from stealing Mis\u00e9’s car to reunite with his family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tale\u2019s core values center around forgiveness, compassion and friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n

It took Mis\u00e9 only four weeks to write the book, but the manuscript sat dormant after she returned to teach in-person classes and gave birth to her second daughter, Camila Alessandra, in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, after a meeting last summer with Flor Ana Mireles, the founder and editor-in-chief of Indie Earth Publishing the idea for the book was revived.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was moved by the story and really wanted to help her get it out there,\u201d Mireles said. \u201cI love the storyline. I thought it was very beautiful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For two months, the pair worked to ensure the book was grammatically sound and that its literacy level was appropriate for young readers. They also enlisted illustrator Kseniia Kudriavtseva to bring the story to life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mis\u00e9, who immigrated to Miami from Cuba when she was seven, is happy that <\/span>A Cat Almost Stole Mom\u2019s Car <\/span><\/i>highlights diversity; her daughter Victoria is the main character.<\/span><\/p>\n

The book also flips upside down so readers can decipher it in Spanish. Leon Palombo, a world languages professor at North Campus, assisted Mis\u00e9 with the editing of the Spanish version.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it’s wonderful that [the main character] is a person of color, that she\u2019s brave and courageous and rides her scooter. I also think it\u2019s wonderful that she is forgiving, thoughtful, loving and caring,\u201d Mis\u00e9 said. \u201cThese are attributes that are important in our world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
