{"id":3790,"date":"2013-10-29T17:28:38","date_gmt":"2013-10-29T21:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=3790"},"modified":"2016-08-30T12:15:35","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T16:15:35","slug":"robotics-club-allows-members-to-merge-love-for-stem-fields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/robotics-club-allows-members-to-merge-love-for-stem-fields\/","title":{"rendered":"Robotics Club Allows Members To Merge Love For STEM Fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining their love for math, science and electronics, the Robotics Club at North Campus has created a \u00a0way for students to see their talents come alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization, which started four years ago when math professor Manuel Caram<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s personally funded the club for two students, allows participants to apply what they learn in their s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cience, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a real-life setting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now with more than twenty members, the club has come a long way from the early days. Club members meet twice a week to discuss projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They create robots in a personal environment. Members have created machines such as the obstacle avoidance robot that can self-detect obstacles in its path to avoid them, and a Segway-like robot that can stand and balance on its own wheels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverything we do for the club is hands-on,\u201d said club member Isaac McPerebo. \u201cWe get individual attention and help that, otherwise, would not be possible in a classroom setting.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meetings allow members to experience all aspects of what robotics is about. Members brainstorm their own projects and have a direct effect on what will be built. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudents have to first be \u2018head-on\u2019 and then hands-on,\u201d Caram<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s said. \u201cThey have to first think about the mechanics of constructing a robot before they are able to put anything together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from the robots themselves, the club has created a greater outreach to the community in order to promote the use of robotics. Last summer, the club collaborated with the STEM Ladder to Student Success, a program at North Campus aimed at increasing the \u00a0involvement of low-income minorities in the STEM fields, to create a three-week summer camp for high school students in Miami-Dade County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The summer camp \u00a0involved learning the basics of robotics and its application to the real world through the Lego Robotics system. More than 50 students participated in the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe got to bond as a team along with the other students,\u201d McPerebo said. \u201c We were their teacher, but we learned so much from each other.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its achievements, the club has faced several challenges. The club hopes to continue to grow and enter competitions, but that has been difficult because they lack the funding to acquire new and improved software, and additional robot parts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, every year, new members must learn from scratch all that goes into building a robot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re on a learning curve because [Miami Dade College] does not offer robotics classes, so we learn as we go along,\u201d said club president Stephen Blasco. \u201cWe all learn from each other, and we all learn together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blasco is hoping that bond will continue to help the organization move forward.
