When B\u00e9chir Sylvain was 13 years old, he rarely saw actors that looked like him on the big screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would just make up that one of [the] characters was Haitian,\u201d said Sylvain, who grew up in Haiti watching classics like <\/span>Indiana Jones<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Back To The Future<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly three decades later, reality has exceeded the dreams Sylvain envisioned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 43-year-old Kendall Campus alumnus is starring in the latest installment of <\/span>Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span>Jurassic World Rebirth<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Set five years after the events of <\/span>Jurrasic World Dominion<\/span><\/i>, the film follows a team searching for dinosaur DNA that \u201cwill bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind,\u201d according to an <\/span>article<\/span><\/a><\/span> on nbc.com.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvain is part of the dinosaur-hunting crew led by <\/span>Black Widow<\/span><\/i>\u2019s Scarlett Johanson as Zora Bennet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He shares the screen with actors like Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, <\/span>Bridgerton<\/span><\/i>\u2019s Jonathan Bailey and Emmy nominee Rupert Friend. Steven Speilberg, producer of <\/span>Jurassic Park <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>The Lost World: Jurassic Park<\/span><\/i>, also returns as an executive producer for the movie.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope a lot of young artists that are Haitian that see me get inspired to say, \u2018Okay, cool, there is a possibility to reach the highest heights,\u2019\u201d Sylvain said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filming, which began in June and is projected to conclude in October, has taken place in Thailand, Malta and London.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvain spent the first month training for the action of the movie: learning how to drive a boat, mountain climb and swim.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the most challenging scenes to shoot were in the muggy mangroves of Thailand\u2014with water \u201cup to [their] necks\u201d and the threat of snakes\u2014and in the intense heat of Malta.<\/span><\/p>\n

But those challenges are nothing compared to his acting career.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvain, who immigrated to Miami from Haiti when he was 13 years old, discovered his passion for theater in an acting class during his senior year at Miami Killian Senior High.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, his love for the industry truly bloomed at Miami Dade College, where he learned the foundations of theater, such as acting, set design, lighting, costumes and makeup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cB\u00e9chir\u2019s nickname was \u2018spotlight\u2019 because he would walk in a room and all eyes would turn on him,\u201d said Sheaun Mckinney, who attended the theater program at MDC with Sylvain. \u201cHe would put on a show wherever we would go\u2014singing, dancing, whatever it was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His first performance was in <\/span>The Mise<\/span><\/i>r, a comedic play by French playwright Moli\u00e8re, where he starred as Mr. Anselme, and was eventually cast as the lead of <\/span>Godspell<\/span><\/i>, a musical by John-Michael Tebelak, despite his struggle with English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember we did a first read through and [it] took at least two and a half hours because I was reading so slow,\u201d recalls Sylvain, who learned English by watching American TV shows and the news.\u00a0 \u201cI could feel everybody\u2019s judgment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After three years at MDC, Sylvain transferred to Southern Methodist University in Texas to pursue a degree in fine arts. But when his father, Joseph, died from cancer in 2005, he dropped out and returned to Miami to take care of his mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite juggling multiple gigs\u2014serving as a manager at Johnny Rockets, a street performer and a merchandise stocker at Victoria\u2019s Secret\u2014Sylvain struggled to make ends meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Refusing to give up on his acting career, he purchased a one-way ticket to California in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI took a leap of faith and believed in myself, but decided to just go out there because if I was going to be miserable, I might as well be miserable pursuing something I love, instead of being somewhere where I literally [felt] like I [was] just dying,\u201d Sylvain recalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within a week of arriving in Los Angeles with only $200 in his pocket, he landed his first acting gig at the intimate <\/span>Stella Adler Theatre<\/span><\/span><\/a> that seats less than 100 guests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The following year, Sylvain landed a national commercial with Allstate insurance. That led to other gigs with\u00a0 Progressive, Toyota, Hyundai and McDonald\u2019s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those opportunities catapulted him into bigger roles. By 2011, he was cast as the main character\u2019s love interest in the sitcom <\/span>Love That Girl! <\/span><\/i>and six years later he landed a part in the comedy\/drama series <\/span>Claws<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But tragedy continued to follow him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2011, Sylvain fell asleep while driving and crashed into a tree. He fractured his arm and his leg broke off his hip; after undergoing surgery and four months of physical therapy, he learned to walk again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven years later, Sylvain\u2019s wife of four years, Shannon, died of colon cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I thought I was going to quit, God figured out a way and always came through\u2026if it wasn\u2019t for my faith, truly, I don\u2019t know if I would\u2019ve continued doing this,\u201d he said. \u201cSomething kept pushing me, egging me on and telling me that I [was] going to be okay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In honor of his wife, Sylvain partnered with the Colon Cancer Alliance to expand Shannon\u2019s <\/span>Brown Sugar Rehab<\/span><\/i>, a non-profit organization that promotes awareness on colon cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from <\/span>Jurassic World Rebirth<\/span><\/i>, Sylvain has recently starred in <\/span>BMF (Black Mafia Family), <\/span><\/i>a crime drama that follows a drug trafficking and money laundering organization, and <\/span>Diarra From Detroit<\/span><\/i>, a comedy-drama about a divorced schoolteacher who stumbles upon a decades-old crime mystery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of his next production, Sylvain\u2019s goal is simple\u2014to be an example for aspiring\u00a0 Haitian actors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an amazing story about perseverance, about determination,\u201d said Sylvain\u2019s lifelong friend Scotty Cayemitte. \u201cYou take a kid [raised] in Haiti that can barely speak English, you know, learned English off of watching TV, and now he\u2019s in Hollywood? Who has that kind of story?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jurassic World Rebirth <\/span>is slated to premiere in theaters on July 2, 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
