{"id":38019,"date":"2024-09-25T18:28:51","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T22:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=38019"},"modified":"2024-09-25T18:28:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T22:28:51","slug":"what-does-it-mean-to-be-latino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-latino\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does It Mean To Be Latino?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think of a Latino, what comes to mind?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, a Latino is someone who<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speaks fluent Spanish, loves reggaeton and bachata or is passionate about their country\u2019s f\u00fatbol team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As someone who was born in the United States and is the product of a Moroccan father and a Colombian mother, the word \u201cLatino\u201d holds a different meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, I was immersed in the Western culture and followed different music, shows and sports from my Colombian counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2014, when <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/colombiareports.com\/amp\/colombias-2014-world-cup\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colombia played their first World Cup <\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 16 years, their success was not important to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basketball was more popular than f\u00fatbol in America, so the only James I knew was Lebron James, not James Rodr\u00edguez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, I didn\u2019t understand Colombians\u2019 passion for soccer and felt disconnected from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, I have improved my Spanish and found my love for f\u00fatbol, yet I am still criticized for not being Latino enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else must I do to prove myself?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Latino immigrants and their descendants feel the same way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2015, only about <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2017\/12\/20\/hispanic-identity-fades-across-generations-as-immigrant-connections-fall-away\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">77 percent of Hispanic<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immigrants\u2019 grandchildren identify as Hispanic and only 50 percent of every generation identifies as Hispanic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latinos who have assimilated to American culture have lost a piece of their identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands, like my mother and grandmother, have immigrated to the U.S. seeking<\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/racial-equity-and-health-policy\/poll-finding\/most-hispanic-immigrants-say-lives-are-better-in-the-us\/#:~:text=Like%20immigrants%20overall%2C%20a%20majority,freedoms%20and%20escaping%20unsafe%20or\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> better lives<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for themselves and their children. There\u2019s no shame in chasing prosperity\u2014so why are current generations shamed for not being in touch with their roots?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Latinos <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrpolicy.org\/initiatives\/council-on-inclusion-and-diversity\/the-latino-worker-project\/executive-summary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe that with hard work<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, success can be attained, and it\u2019s the highest form in which one can make their family proud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This belief is represented in immigrants\u2019 children, who can achieve this dream of success with the new opportunities presented to them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a \u201ctrue\u201d Latino in the U.S. isn\u2019t about the music you listen to, the sports you follow, or even the languages you know. Rather, it\u2019s about embracing the ambitious values instilled by your immigrant ancestors\u2014that is the ultimate expression of being Latino. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you think of a Latino, what comes to mind?
