Their 10-4 record has them shooting up the National Junior College Athletic Association division I women\u2019s soccer poll.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, they are ranked 15th in the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major reason for that is the play of freshman forward Julia Gurgel. The Brazilian-born striker leads the team with 12 goals and 24 points.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt brings me joy to help my team,\u201d Gurgel said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her breakout performance was on Sept. 27 when the uber-talented forward scored two goals in a 3-2 win versus Eastern Florida State College, who at the time was the ninth-ranked team in the country.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe\u2019s been a huge contributing factor to the success of the team this season,\u201d said Lady Sharks Head Coach <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/mdc-hires-coaches-to-lead-their-soccer-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramiro Vengoechea<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHer being able to provide the goals in some of the big games has really helped us for sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gurgel started playing soccer at the age of seven in her hometown of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo\u00e3o Pessoa, a coastal city in the northeastern part of Brazil. She aspired to play like her idols, Brazilian icon Neymar J<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00fanior, and soccer legend Lionel Messi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love the competition of the game,\u201d Gurgel said. \u201cAlso to be a part of a team, and the friends you make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But her biggest role model is her mother Germana Bezerra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was always the two of us and she was always with me for everything,\u201d Gurgel said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gurgel sharpened her soccer toolkit at Col<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9gio Marista Assun\u00e7\u00e3o. That opportunity eventually led her to join soccer clubs: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gr\u00eamio and Futebol Com Vida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, she played in five games for Gr\u00eamio and tallied two goals. Last year, she played in seven games at Futebol Com Vida and scored six goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, Gurgel\u2019s film caught the eye of Vengoechea, as he was building his first roster at MDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19-year-old\u2019s talent has fit in flawlessly with the Lady Sharks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 5, <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcathletics.com\/sports\/wsoc\/2024-25\/releases\/20241005ykc1vn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gurgel scored both goals<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in MDC\u2019s 2-0 win versus Monroe Community College.
