{"id":38179,"date":"2024-10-17T23:48:49","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T03:48:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=38179"},"modified":"2024-10-17T23:49:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-18T03:49:02","slug":"heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-2024-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-2024-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s What You Need To Know About The 2024 Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #ff0000;\">By Nikole Valiente and Daylyin Staples<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Election Day only three weeks away, we\u2019ve compiled a guide with the most important information you need to know for Nov. 5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is what we found:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>WHERE YOU VOTE<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>North Campus<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 11380 N.W. 27th Ave., and <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Kendall Campus<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 11011 S.W. 104th St., return as early voting sites from Oct. 21 through Nov. 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registered voters can cast their ballots at Kendall Campus\u2019 Fascell Conference Center in building K or North Campus\u2019 Learning Resources Center in the 2000 building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Election Day, citizens must vote at their assigned precinct, which is listed on the voter registration card or can be found online at <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/y2ys5e92\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/y2ys5e92<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami Dade College\u2019s early voting sites will be hosting voting rallies sponsored by the Institute for Civic Engagement &amp; Democracy and ENGAGE Florida\u2014a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that aims to increase voter education and civic engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendall Campus will host their voting rally on Oct. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the breezeway in the 2000 building. North Campus\u2019 rally will be on Oct. 30 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m in the breezeway in the 4000 building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to make [voting] a lifetime habit for students,\u201d said Josh Young, college-wide iCED director. \u201cSo maybe they vote for the first time here \u2026 and they vote in every election. That&#8217;s our goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citizens casting their ballot must bring photo identification with their name and signature\u2014like a Florida driver\u2019s license, state ID and United States passport\u2014or some form of identification with their name and address, such as a utility bill, bank statement or government check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voter registration cards are highly encouraged, but not required, to facilitate the check-in process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can also opt to vote by mail. Vote-by-Mail ballots can be requested by visiting Miami-Dade County\u2019s online portal at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yh8jcnnn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/yh8jcnnn<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or emailing <\/span><a href=\"mailto:votebymail@miamidade.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">votebymail@miamidade.gov<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deadline to request a ballot is Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. Ballots must be mailed or turned in to the Miami-Dade Elections Department, 2700 N.W. 87th Ave., by\u00a0 7 p.m. on Election Day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[By doing] something as simple as casting a ballot\u2026 believe it or not, you are impacting so many lives that you will never know or never meet,\u201d said Melissa Lau, grant coordinator for the <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/vote\/be-a-paid-poll-worker.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poll Workers Are Heroes<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>WHAT\u2019S ON THE BALLOT<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ballot\u2019s main attraction is the presidential election where Republican <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Donald J. Trump <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">squares off against Democratic candidate <\/span><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Kamala D. Harris<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their running mates are Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That race is followed by the United States and Florida Congressional candidates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nominees include: Republican Rick Scott and Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell vying for U.S. Senator, Republican Mario-Diaz-Balart and Democrat Joey Atkins battling to be the District 26 U.S. Representative, and Republican Bryan Avila and Democrat Charles A. Lewis I competing to be the District 39 Florida Senator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voters can also decide if Florida Supreme Court Justices Renatha Francis and Meredith Sasso, and three judges on the 3rd District Court of Appeal should remain in office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami-Dade County sheriff\u2019s race, an office that <\/span><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flsheriffs.org\/uploads\/Solidifying_the_Elected__Independent_Office_of_the_Sheriff.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hasn&#8217;t been voted on since 1966<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, features\u00a0 Republican nominee Rosanna \u201cRosie\u201d Cordero-Stutz and Democratic candidate James Reyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the ballot has nominees for offices such as property appraiser, tax collector, county judge, supervisor of elections and the school board members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To read a detailed list of candidates and request a sample ballot, which is written in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole, visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ycyx5tcm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ycyx5tcm<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe always think about the president\u2019s race\u2026but nothing is going to impact you more than the issues locally,\u201d said <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/north-campus-selects-new-iced-director\/\">Komarvoski \u201cTron\u201d Wells<\/a><\/span>, North Campus\u2019 iCED director.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><b>The Six Proposed Amendments\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 1\u2014Instituting Partisan School Board Elections\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes for school board members to be elected in a partisan election rather than a nonpartisan election.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cyes\u201d would allow political parties to nominate candidates\u2014requiring them to list their political affiliation on the ballot\u2014while voting \u201cno\u201d would let candidates remain nonpartisan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 2\u2014Establishing Fishing And Hunting As A State Constitutional Right<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes for fishing and hunting to be listed as rights protected by the Florida State Constitution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not nullify the authority of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, an agency that manages and enforces laws regarding the state\u2019s fish and wildlife resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cyes\u201d\u00a0 would hinder state legislators from restricting certain methods of fishing or hunting, whereas voting \u201cno\u201d would make it easier to limit both activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 3\u2014Legalizing Recreational Marijuana<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes to allow adults 21 years old or older to possess, purchase or use marijuana products and accessories for non-medical purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would also permit people, organizations and medical marijuana treatment centers with a state license to acquire, cultivate, process, manufacture, sell and distribute marijuana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cno\u201d would keep the state\u2019s existing law, which only allows the consumption and sale of marijuana for medical purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 4\u2014Right To Abortion<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes to prohibit Florida from banning, penalizing, delaying or restricting abortion before fetal viability\u2014the period at which a fetus can survive outside the womb\u2014or when deemed necessary by a physician to protect<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the patient\u2019s health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not nullify the Florida Legislature\u2019s constitutional authority to require parents or guardians to be notified before a minor has an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cyes\u201d would legalize abortion before the period of fetal viability and when a doctor deems the mother\u2019s safety is at stake; voting \u201cno\u201d would keep Florida\u2019s current abortion law, which bans most abortions after the first six weeks of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 5\u2014Homestead Exemption Inflation Adjustment<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes an annual adjustment for inflation to homestead exemptions, which are tax breaks given on homes based on their assessed value.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cyes\u201d would allow homestead tax exemptions to increase or decrease alongside inflation, whereas voting \u201cno\u201d would leave the current exemption as inflation changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Amendment 6\u2014Repeal of Public Campaign Financing<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This amendment proposes the repeal of state funding for candidates running for statewide offices, including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting \u201cyes\u201d would no longer allow taxpayer money to fund campaigns for statewide offices, whereas voting \u201cno\u201d would maintain public financing for candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou get to really put your opinions forward when you vote,\u201d said Arianna Aragon, a Kendall Campus iCED civic ambassador and peer advocate for the Poll Workers Are Heroes campaign. \u201cIf you don\u2019t vote, you\u2019re letting everyone else speak for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For iCED\u2019s voter\u2019s guide, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/pubdzpd7\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">visit https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/pubdzpd<\/span>7<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isabella Arce contributed to this report.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
