Emily Sendin knows the importance of student-led podcasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, she spearheaded efforts by <\/span>Urbana<\/span><\/i>, the literary arts magazine at Eduardo J. Padr<\/span>\u00f3<\/span>n Campus, as they launched the <\/span>Urbanites<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span> podcast series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Five years later, Sendin<\/span>\u2014<\/span>now an English and Communications professor at Kendall Campus<\/span>\u2014<\/span>has galvanized a new group of aspiring podcasters to start the campus\u2019 first student-led podcast platform, <\/span>StoryBytes<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAlpha and Gen Z generation really gravitate toward this means of getting information\u2026\u201d Sendin said. \u201cSo I think that it’s relevant to the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

StoryBytes <\/span><\/i>took flight this fall.\u00a0 It aims to be a platform that amplifies student voices.<\/span><\/p>\n

The publication already has starpower. Sendin recruited <\/span>National Public Radio\u2019s Student Podcast Challenge<\/span><\/a><\/span> winner <\/span>Michael Vargas<\/span><\/a><\/span>, a former student, to join the team. He serves as vice president.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding out the editorial board are president<\/span> Isabel Paz<\/b><\/span>, secretary <\/span>Victoria Cuellar<\/b><\/span> and treasurer <\/span>Ainhoa Osorio Torres<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0C<\/span>urrently, StoryBytes<\/em> has 14 members. They have been working on the their <\/span>website<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Instagram<\/span><\/a><\/span> page and media kit\u2014a digital compilation of the platform’s responsibilities and operational and promotional costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Episodes are released weekly for each podcast series on SoundCloud.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their first project, <\/span>The Vault<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span>, debuted on Oct. 16. It analyzes the transfer essays of Miami Dade College alumni who have matriculated to Ivy League schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuellar writes the scripts, Vargas edits, and Torres and Paz host. The script is written and revised in a week before it is recorded at the <\/span>Speech Lab<\/span><\/a><\/span> on Monday mornings. Vargas then has two weeks to edit. Episodes are posted every Wednesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just hope it helps [students] take the pressure off [sending applications],\u201d Torres said. \u201cYou spend all your time and energy trying to do your best\u2026and it could mean a lot to have that sort of inspiration from students that have started at MDC, [and] end up going to Cornell, Brown or Stanford.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vault<\/span><\/i> will continue through the spring semester. A visual element will be added with behind the scenes videos and interviews with alumni.<\/span><\/p>\n

In tandem with the English Honors Society, <\/span>StoryBytes<\/span><\/i> will also host online workshops to aid students working on their transfer essays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This month, they<\/span> plan to bring the winning entries of the campus\u2019 Learning Resources\u2019 Ghost Story competition\u2014announced on Nov. 15\u2014to life through the <\/span>Ghost Stories <\/span><\/i>series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To further connect with its audience, <\/span>StoryBytes <\/span><\/i>plans to kickoff <\/span>The Friendship Project<\/span><\/i> to give groups an opportunity to publish a podcast series under their platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, they are<\/span>\u00a0hosting a <\/span>podcast oral pitch competition<\/span><\/a><\/span> that lets students submit potential series ideas through Jan. 13. Projects will be pitched at the Speech Lab on Feb. 7. Winners will work with the <\/span>StoryBytes<\/span><\/i> team to produce the idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important for students to participate in podcasts,\u201d Paz said. \u201cIt helps them expand their perspective\u2026and in doing that [they] build empathy with the world and patience with themselves.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
