{"id":38372,"date":"2024-11-14T21:05:25","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T02:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=38372"},"modified":"2024-11-21T01:10:21","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T06:10:21","slug":"beloved-wolfson-campus-photography-professor-dies-at-71","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/beloved-wolfson-campus-photography-professor-dies-at-71\/","title":{"rendered":"Beloved Wolfson Campus Photography Professor Dies At 71"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">By Nikole Valiente and Isabella Arce<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara Matehu got used to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/miami-fl\/joseph-tamargo-12044200\">Joseph Tamargo<\/a><\/span>\u2019s phone calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, she studied photography with the Wolfson Campus professor, eventually serving as his lab assistant for five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Tamargo retired in 2020 after nearly four decades at Miami Dade College, the two remained tight.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They traveled, drank coffee, chatted about their passion for photography and often had lunch at Matehu\u2019s grandmother\u2019s house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe cultivated a friendship,\u201d the 29-year-old said. \u201cHe was like my grandfather.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matehu, who is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/barbaramatehu?igsh=eXZuMThyY2g4czRn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">freelance photographer<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and videographer, grew fond of Tamargo\u2019s inspiring phone calls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday will be a good day,\u201d he would often tell her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A month after Tamargo\u2019s abrupt passing, she still sits by the phone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m waiting for him to call me,\u201d Matehu said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo died on Oct. 22 at <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/baptisthealth.net\/locations\/hospitals\/baptist-hospital-of-miami\">Baptist Hospital<\/a><\/span> in Kendall, after undergoing a procedure to remove a cancerous growth in his bladder. He was 71.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 7, more than 150 family members, friends, colleagues and students celebrated his life at his viewing at Caballero Rivero Little Havana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They exchanged laughs and smiles and swapped their favorite Tamargo stories; tears rolled down some faces while others clutched onto mementos of their beloved professor, including Nikon and Canon cameras, a black paisley bandana and Kodak film rolls that read, \u201cI love you old man\u201d and \u201cforever in our hearts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo is survived by his wife of 43 years Mayra Tamargo, sons Gabriel, David and Derek Tamargo, older sister Yolanda Tamargo, granddaughter Anais Tamargo, niece Christie Goheen, nephew Anthony Smith and his dog Wolf.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy father should have been here today\u2026<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d David said at the viewing. \u201cHe had incredible spirit, incredible energy and a desire to continue traveling with me. We had so many plans for books, for exhibitions. We were just getting started.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Early Years<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo was born in May of 1953 in Manhattan to Grace Mira and Rolando Tamargo. They moved to Miami when he was three to be closer to his paternal grandmother, who lived in Cuba.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Tamargo never owned a camera in his childhood, once he picked one up in 1970, he never put it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere was no defining moment,\u201d David said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t look at the Mona Lisa and decide to be a painter\u2014he was passionate about photography his entire life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a young adult, Tamargo was part of the \u201chippie scene\u201d in South Florida. He frequented a club called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Place<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in North Miami to watch bands such as WOWII and Kraker perform. At some point, he even rocked an afro and played drums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter we graduated from high school, I think all of these Cuban kids started attracting each other like a magnet\u2026\u201d said Tony Labat, Tamargo\u2019s friend of 52 years. \u201cThe fashions we would wear, the clubs that we would go to, the concerts. We started creating our own community.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School in 1972. He earned a bachelor\u2019s of fine arts in art from Florida International University in 1976 and a master of fine arts in photography from the University of Miami in 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Finding Love<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1979, Tamargo, who worked at a portable library in Miami, met his wife-to-be Mayra after she answered the phone for her friend Anita Summer, who had requested a book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI said, \u2018Anita, I don\u2019t care what you say, but I want you to get this call because I want to meet this man,\u2019\u201d Mayra recalls. \u201cI fell in love with just that one call.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On their first date, Tamargo arrived at her house with three white roses, foreshadowing the birth of their three boys, Mayra said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year later, they got married at St. Dominic Catholic Parish and spent their honeymoon in Spain and San Francisco.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1982, Mayra gave birth to their first son, Gabriel. They moved into a make-shift apartment in her parents\u2019 house near Westchester. The following year, David was born and in 1984, they welcomed their third son Derek.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a husband, he was very romantic and very serving,\u201d said Mayra, who was temporarily <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paralyzed and battled cervical cancer during their marriage. \u201cHe always made sure that he was catering to me, even cooked for me and took care of me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Shifting Gears<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Tamargo aspired to pursue a career in photography, he put his dreams aside to provide for his family. He worked midnight shifts for Eastern Air Lines, supervising the aircraft cleaning crew. In 1986, he became an adjunct photography professor at MDC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But his job at the airline remained his family\u2019s ticket to travel. They took spontaneous vacations to San Francisco to eat Chinese food and visited museums. Tamargo always brought his camera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Eastern went bankrupt in 1991, the then 38-year-old landed a full-time teaching position at Wolfson Campus. He taught courses such as: Introduction to Photography, Intermediate Photography, Advanced Photography, Color Photography 1 and 2, Visual Arts Workshop and Portfolio Preparation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The professor was a proponent of analog photography. His teaching philosophy centered around authenticity and intentionality; he wanted students to tell meaningful stories with their photos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome hated him, others loved him, because he was very honest,\u201d recalls Matehu, who spent hours developing film in the darkroom. \u201cHe was not a perfectionist, but he wanted you to know all you needed to know to print so that later, you could break the rules.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo was respected for his blunt critiques.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Woon, who was Tamargo\u2019s student from 2001 to 2003, recalls showing the professor a sculpture he created, shortly after 9\/11. It was a suitcase filled with essentials needed to survive a terrorist attack such as canned food, duck tape and a gas mask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo was critical of the project. He asked, \u201cWhat was in the suitcase and why was it there?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was time for Woon to submit his project, he reminded the professor that he had \u201cripped it apart\u201d and \u201cmade fun of [him].\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo nodded his head and replied, \u201cYou\u2019re so stupid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realized at that moment he wanted me to stand up for my convictions. So he&#8217;s pushing me, and initially, you know, I folded,\u201d Woon said. \u201cAnd from that moment on, I can honestly say, I walk into a critique being able to stand up and defend my work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After retiring from Wolfson Campus in 2020, Tamargo returned a few years later as an adjunct professor\u2014with his signature ponytail, black beret, dark circular shades, and camera over his shoulder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe had no need to keep teaching, but he loved his students,\u201d Yolanda said. \u201cNothing gratified him more than that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Point And Shoot<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1999, Tamargo was accepted into the FullBright Scholar Program\u2014a government funded international exchange program that provides grants to study, teach or complete research abroad\u2014for his project <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Atget to Friedlander: Street Photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The endeavor consisted of teaching and researching street photography in Santiago, Chile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2001 through 2014, Tamargo continued traveling to the county to document the Hills of Valparaiso. He took more than 40,000 photos.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo was captivated by people\u2019s stories. He often photographed people in the streets of Chile. He printed the images in the United States and gifted them to his subjects the following year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe had a way of piercing through the veneer of the world and looking deeper [into] what the world was like, and it came out so clearly in his photography,\u201d said longtime friend and Books &amp; Books owner Mitchell Kaplan, who frequently featured Tamargo\u2019s work in the bookstore since its launch in the 1980s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo\u2019s work has been featured at the George Eastman House Museum of Photography and Film, Lehigh University Art Gallery&#8217;s Latin American collection, Southeastern Museum of Photography and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/museum-of-art-and-design-at-miami-dade-college-opens-new-education-lab\/\">Museum of Art and Design<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><b>Changing Lenses<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38434\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38434\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-38434\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Tamargo14.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38434\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Man&#8217;s Best Friend: Pictured above is Joseph Tamargo, a few years ago, as he took a break from walking his German Shepherd Wolf. PHOTO COURTESY OF DAVID TAMARGO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toward the end of his life, Tamargo was on a mission to create a photobook of landforms\u2014specifically sand dunes\u2014across the seven continents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last summer, Tamargo and his son David documented the Tottori Sand Dunes, located on the western coast of Japan. Prior to that, the professor traveled to Morocco and Iceland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David, who has Tamargo\u2019s negatives from those experiences, will be completing the project. He is seeking locations to exhibit his dad\u2019s work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou could never call him old,\u201d Yolanda said. \u201cHe was 70 years old but he was 20 years young.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamargo also continued feeding his hunger for knowledge. He was learning to speak French and to make <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mantecado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ice cream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Tamargo remained a simple man at heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He enjoyed walking his German Shepherd Wolf down Country Club Prado Parkway in Coral Gables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And he ate the same breakfast every Friday at Sunny Side Caf\u00e9 in South Beach\u2014scrambled eggs with cheese, hash brown potatoes, bread and a Cuban espresso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI looked forward to those Fridays religiously; it was just a very special time,\u201d Labat said. \u201cI will miss him a lot.
