{"id":38606,"date":"2024-12-06T13:20:01","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T18:20:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/\/?p=38606"},"modified":"2024-12-06T13:53:53","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T18:53:53","slug":"breaking-down-the-role-of-language-in-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/breaking-down-the-role-of-language-in-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking Down The Role Of Language In Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Charles Darwin was right when he said humans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/darwin-online.org.uk\/converted\/pdf\/1861_OriginNY_F382.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">descended from a common ancestor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, why can we communicate complex thoughts and emotions through words, but other species can\u2019t?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linguistics professor Noam Chomsky proposed that people are born with the ability to learn language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brainstuff.org\/blog\/what-is-the-wernicke-geschwind-model#google_vignette\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wernicke-Geschwind Model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for language processing, when we listen to someone speak, our brains convert sound waves into electrical signals that are sent to the primary auditory cortex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These signals are processed by Wernicke\u2019s area\u2014the part of the brain that\u2019s responsible for understanding words\u2014to generate a reply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That response is then sent to Broca\u2019s area\u2014the part of the brain that\u2019s responsible for speech production\u2014and later to the primary motor cortex, which controls the muscles needed to communicate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective way to learn a new language is by immersing yourself in an environment where it\u2019s spoken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3322418\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors such as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> motivation, environment, cognitive abilities, emotional agility, learning style, commitment and previous experience also affect language acquisition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as Italian linguist Mario Pei explains, language only gains purpose when shared within the society and when people collectively choose to accept it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to social psychologist Howard Giles\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.lib.umn.edu\/communication\/chapter\/3-4-language-society-and-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication Accommodation Theory<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people can modify their communication style to fit different social contexts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quality is very important in multilingual or multicultural societies, such as in Miami. In these environments, people might switch languages or dialects multiple times a day, navigating between identities and relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language is essential to culture. As novelist Khaled Hosseini said: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/greenheart.org\/blog\/greenheart-international\/language-the-essence-of-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf culture was a house, then language was the key to the front door, to all the rooms inside<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics of bilingualism argue that switching between languages can lead to communication delays or a weaker vocabulary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, speaking a second language allows humans to connect with others and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.albany.edu\/~mm924921\/Adesope%20et%20al.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers cognitive benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014including delaying age-related conditions, such as dementia, and enhancing skills, like attention, memory retention and problem-solving<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most languages across the world share common characteristics, such as verb tenses, question formation and plural\/singular or male\/female distinctions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These features allow us to talk about things that are right in front of us or far away, things that have existed, things that never happened or things that could occur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an inseparable connection between language and thought.
