Miami Dade College\u2019s award-winning television station, MDC-TV, has won their 11th Suncoast Regional Emmy Award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The honor was presented by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their video project, <\/span>Video Games Concert 2024<\/span><\/i><\/a>, in the <\/span>Special Event Coverage-Edited<\/strong> category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Winners<\/span><\/a> were announced on Dec. 7 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt incredible,\u201d said Ariel Rubalcava, executive director and senior producer of MDC-TV. \u201cI\u2019m my worst critic\u2026and this [project], I really liked it, and I was just extremely happy that it won.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its establishment in 2008, MDC-TV has received 22 Emmy nominations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, the station was also awarded a <\/span>Silver Davey Award<\/span><\/a> by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts for <\/span>Video Game Concert 2024<\/span><\/i> in the General Entertainment category and for <\/span>Black History Month Promo<\/span><\/i><\/a> in the Public Service and Activism category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Video Games Concert 2024 <\/span><\/i>was led by Rubalcava and Alberto Bade, director of the MDC Symphony Orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project, which has happened seven times since its debut in 2015, features soundtracks from video games such as Halo, Final Fantasy Four and Metal Gear Solid 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re always grateful that a community college like ours can achieve a nomination and even [win] as many Emmys as we have,\u201d Bade said. \u201cI don\u2019t know too many colleges that have Emmy Awards the way MDC does, so it is a very distinct honor.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another MDC-TV video project, <\/span>Raices de Espa\u00f1a<\/span><\/i><\/a> (<\/span>Roots of Spain<\/span><\/i>), was nominated under the <\/span>Historical\/Cultural Short Form Content<\/b> category but fell just short of an Emmy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was filmed in collaboration with the College\u2019s Symphony Orchestra to showcase the roots of Spanish culture through music. Performances were recorded on Oct. 10, 2023 at North Campus\u2019 Lehman Theatre for Hispanic Heritage Month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project also featured behind-the-scenes interviews about each piece and the inspiration behind them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marcos Quesada<\/span><\/a>, the main trumpet player of Orquesta Metropolitana de Madrid (Madrid Metropolitan Orchestra), and \u00c1lvaro Alvarado, a Spanish composer, helped bring the score to life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alvarado wrote two original pieces for the performance\u2014<\/span>Elegia Torera (Bullfighting Elegy)<\/span><\/i>, which follows the story of a bullfighter, and <\/span>Amores Goyescos (Goyean Loves)<\/span><\/i>, which pays tribute to Fransico Goya, who served as a first court painter for El Prado, Madrid during the early nineteenth century.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always room for improvement,\u201d said James Pierre, a producer at MDC-TV. \u201cBut we are happy to achieve such great pieces. I think our efforts are [definitely] being recognized by one of the highest.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>MDC-TV airs on Comcast channel 78, Atlantic Broadband channel 78, AT&T U-Verse channel 99 and on <\/span>YouTube<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
