V\u00edctor Gonz\u00e1lez discovered his passion for physics and mathematics in the fourth grade.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in Cuba, he struggled to find resources to feed his curiosity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, a laptop he was gifted at the age of nine was a game changer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI started looking at Wikipedia for articles about math and scientists like Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, and this world of physics,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez said. \u201cI [said,] \u2018Oh, this is really cool. I would like to investigate more.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Gonz\u00e1lez\u2014a sophomore studying mathematics in the Honors College at Kendall Campus\u2014is researching the topics that captivated him as a child.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Dec. 6, the 21-year-old co-published his third scholarly research paper entitled, <\/span>Localization of unique factorization semidomains<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 11-page paper, featured in Cornell University\u2019s <\/span>arXiv<\/span><\/a> research platform, was completed under the guidance of Harold Polo, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Irvine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the last two years, Gonz\u00e1lez has co-published <\/span>On the ascent of almost and quasi-atomicity to monoid semidomains<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>On the atomicity of power monoids of Puiseux monoids<\/span><\/i><\/a>. The latter is featured in the International Journal of Algebra and Computation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s truly impressive to see how much V\u00edctor is already contributing to the mathematical community at such a young age,\u201d Polo said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gonz\u00e1lez grew up participating in olympiads in Cuba that required him to solve complex math and physics problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI [would] say, \u2018Oh, my God, I love to do these, to go deep into questions and just think about [them,]\u201d he recalls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During high school, Gonz\u00e1lez, who attended Instituto Preuniversitario Vocacional de Ciencias Exactas Vlad\u00edmir Ilich Lenin<\/a><\/span>, participated in the country\u2019s annual National Knowledge Contest twice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite lacking resources to prepare for the physics competition the first time, he made due\u2014with translated Russian textbooks\u2014winning a gold medal both years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gonz\u00e1lez also participated in the Iberoamerican Physics Olympics in El Salvador, where he earned a silver medal, and the Iranian Geometry Olympiad, which was held virtually during the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

In August of 2022, the aspiring mathematician immigrated to the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a very, very hard decision\u2026\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez recalls. \u201cI was really worried to start again, [in] a new country [where] I didn’t know the language, how things work[ed], and I didn’t want to leave my mom and my grandma alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

However, his desire to provide a better life for his mom and grandmother pushed him to persevere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to leaving Cuba, Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s former professor connected him with a mentee, Felix Gotti, a postdoctoral fellow and research coordinator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

After witnessing the young man\u2019s interest in mathematics, Gotti introduced him to <\/span>CrowdMath<\/span><\/a>\u2014a research program through MIT that has allowed him to co-publish his three research papers.<\/span><\/p>\n

At Miami Dade College, Gonz\u00e1lez is using his love for physics and mathematics to help his peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He serves as a founding member of <\/span>Math4U<\/span><\/a>\u2014a nonprofit organization that aims to ensure everyone, especially immigrant students, have access to math tutoring\u2014and tutors first-year Honors College students at Eduardo J. Padr\u00f3n Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI would describe V\u00edctor as already a success story,\u201d said Maria Diaz-Medina, an academic advisor from the World Languages Department who met Gonz\u00e1lez last January. \u201cDespite all his academic and personal accomplishments at such an early age, V\u00edctor is a very humble person and is very committed to giving back to the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gonz\u00e1lez is slated to graduate with an associate\u2019s of arts degree in mathematics from MDC this spring. He aspires to transfer to MIT and obtain a doctoral degree in mathematics.<\/span><\/p>\n
