Though they promised him forever, they missed his \u201cexit sign,\u201d \u201ckept on drivin\u2019 straight and left [their] future to the right.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Left with unresolved anger, guilt and loneliness, Kahan channels his feelings into a catchy chorus that makes you feel like a passenger riding through the pain with him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That vulnerability compelled me to listen to the entire <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick Season<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> album. Eventually, I was walking into the newsroom every day with a new track to dissect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahan\u2014who grew up in Strafford, a town in Vermont, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonmagazine.com\/arts-entertainment\/2023\/08\/31\/noah-kahan-new-england\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> artists like Paul Simon, Cat Stevens and The Lumineers\u2014entered the music scene in 2017 with his single, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nf-w6C9oy2A\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Blood<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He signed with Republic Records; the label is home to giants like Taylor Swift, James Bay and Ariana Grande.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years later, he released his first album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Busyhead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Was\/I Am<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2021). Both projects have a pop-indie vibe and touch on failed relationships, loneliness and mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick Season <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2022) that introduced him to bigger audiences. According to an\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gHEaANA2ALA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Canadian broadcaster Tom Power, Kahan teased a snippet of the song on TikTok in 2020, but almost took it down because he didn\u2019t see people liking it or commenting. When he woke up the next morning, the video had garnered thousands of likes, fueling Kahan to complete the song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 14-track album, the 28-year-old returns to his folk roots. His lyrics explore emotions like love and depression, while also conveying nostalgia for his hometown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album\u2019s name refers to a Vermont phrase that describes the transition between autumn and winter, characterized by barren trees, cold, gloomy weather and less daylight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several songs on the album have two parts: a beginning laced with Kahan\u2019s soft vocals and guitar\/mandolin, followed by an intense, sing-your-heart-out chorus, where he belts out raw emotions like sadness, frustration and yearning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tracks like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=dqbXCAt5VV4\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All My Love<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=ENHC9RkzFLA&amp;pp=ygUSWW91cmUgZ29ubmEgZ28gZmFy\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re Gonna Go Far<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a song on the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Forever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edition, explore the idea of letting go of someone you love and wishing them the best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrics such as \u201cyou burrowed in under my skin, what I&#8217;d give to have you out from me,\u201d contrasted with lyrics like \u201cthere ain\u2019t a drop of bad blood,\u201d allows listeners to visualize how attached Kahan still feels to his ex-lover.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ip-dkLJyMLg\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homesick<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kahan paints a picture of a mundane, antiquated Strafford. Using exaggerated statements such as \u201cI\u2019m tired of dirt roads named after high school friends\u2019 grandfathers\u201d and \u201ctime moves so damn slow I swear I feel my organs failing,\u201d Kahan conveys his desperation to leave. The song\u2019s fast-pace, dominated by electric guitar and drums, is a stark contrast to the slowness of his hometown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kahan\u2019s punchy lyrics climax in an angsty chorus that has you belting, \u201cI would leave if only I could find a reason\/I\u2019m mean because I grew up in New England,\u201d even if you\u2019ve never stepped foot in Vermont. Though the track puts a play on the word \u2018homesick,\u2019 the song embodies pride for the place that made him who he is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other songs on the album highlight Kahan\u2019s gift for storytelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jm76aFLbgRc&amp;pp=ygUJI2NvbWVub2Fo\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come Over<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> invites listeners into Kahan\u2019s isolation. The singer describes his home with human qualities\u2014\u201cthe sad house on Balch Street\u201d that \u201cwas designed to kinda look like it\u2019s crying,\u201d where \u201cthe eyes are the windows\u201d and \u201cthe garage is the mouth\u201d\u2014that allow you to picture him living in sadness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the hook, he asks his lover to \u201ccome over\u201d through a heartfelt wail, later adding \u201cyou don\u2019t have to tell the other kids at school.\u201d Kahan\u2019s child-like plea for company speaks to the innocence and vulnerability in relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=WtKTfzNcX9Y\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orange Juice<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells the story of two friends who reunite after a deadly car accident. One friend left town, found God and got sober, while the other stayed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feelings of resentment and insecurity surface through verses like \u201cbut it made you a stranger\/filled you with anger\/now I\u2019m third in the lineup\/to your Lord and your Savior,\u201d where Kahan\u2019s voice seamlessly fluctuates between tenderness and restrained bitterness, demonstrating the control he has over it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=iXZZpAw0QLE\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Complaints<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.youtube.com\/watch?v=rcWodDfNklg\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing Sideways<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> zero-in on Kahan\u2019s struggle with depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using satirical descriptions, like a conversation with his \u201csad-eyed middle-aged\u201d therapist about Jesus on his \u201coverpriced new leather couch,\u201d Kahan walks you through the frustration of therapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphic metaphors such as \u201ckeep the bad sh*t in my liver\u201d (a reference to his dependence on alcohol) and \u201cfilled the hole in my head with prescription medication\u201d allow you to understand Kahan\u2019s suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its core, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick Season <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an ode to anyone going through grief, loneliness, heartbreak and mental health hardships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although his songs are packed with deeply specific details about New England and his struggles, Kahan\u2019s specificity and transparency helps people feel seen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His lyrics invite listeners to confront the parts of themselves they\u2019re uncomfortable with, knowing they\u2019re not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last summer, Stick Season, a song by folk-pop artist Noah Kahan, became a staple in the newsroom after our adviser shared it with us.
