The Miami Dade College Journalism Speaker Series is back.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s edition, the 17th installation in the series which was started in 2008, will feature journalists from the <\/span>Miami Herald,<\/span><\/i> Univision,<\/span><\/i> WSVN<\/span><\/i> 7 and <\/span>WLRN<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Segments, which last 30 minutes and are posted on <\/span>MDC-TV\u2019s YouTube Channel<\/span><\/a>, will be filmed in February, March, April and May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are excited to hear from this year\u2019s guests,\u201d said Manolo Barco, the founder of the series and media adviser to <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i><\/a>, the student newspaper at MDC. \u201cHaving them share their knowledge and experiences is a gift.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kicking off this year’s series is <\/span>Joshua Ceballos<\/b><\/a>, a local government accountability reporter at <\/span>WLRN<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0 He will speak on Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. at Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. Second Avenue, Room 8503.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before joining WLRN, Ceballos was a staff writer for <\/span>Miami New Times<\/span><\/i>, focusing on public corruption and how it affects the lives of real people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ceballos, a graduate of Westland Hialeah Senior High School, started his journalism career at <\/span>PantherNOW<\/span><\/i>, Florida International University\u2019s student newspaper and website. He was the organization’s news director and investigations editor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TODAY IN FLORIDA<\/span><\/i> news anchor, <\/span>Tavares Jones<\/b><\/a>, will visit the MDC Journalism Speaker Series <\/span>on March 13 at North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27h avenue, Room 4209 at 1 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The WSVN 7, Emmy-nominated journalist has worked in television markets in Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Arkansas. Tavares, a University of Florida graduate, has a <\/span>dual bachelors degree in broadcast journalism and political science.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Miami Herald<\/span><\/i> investigative reporter <\/span>Brittany Wallman<\/b><\/a> will be the third speaker in the series on April 15 at North Campus, Room 2131 at noon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to the <\/span>Herald<\/span><\/i>, Wallman worked at the <\/span>South Florida Sun Sentinel<\/span><\/i> in Broward County for 25 years. First as a local government reporter and then as a member of the paper\u2019s investigations team, serving as editor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, Wallman, a UF graduate, shared in the <\/span>Sun Sentinel<\/span><\/i>\u2019s Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for their coverage of the Parkland school shooting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The speaker series\u2019 final guest will be <\/span>Andr\u00e9s Giraldo<\/b><\/a>, a multimedia journalist at <\/span>Univision New England <\/span><\/i>on <\/span>May 30 at noon at<\/span>\u00a0 Hialeah Campus, 1780 W. 49th St., in the Student Services lobby located in front of Student Life. That interview will <\/span>conducted in Spanish, a first for the Speaker Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Giraldo served as a photographer for <\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i> last year, winning<\/span> two first-place awards for best news story and picture story<\/span><\/a> from the Florida College System Publications Association in November.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing in [<\/span>The Reporter<\/span><\/i>] gave me many ways to see things differently and [allowed] me to grow my career toward what I wanted to continue achieving professionally,\u201d Giraldo said.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Giraldo, who has a bachelor\u2019s degree in audiovisual communication from the University of Medellin in Colombia, launched <\/span>People News<\/span><\/a>, an Instagram page that posted weekly news segments of about 45 minutes throughout the outbreak. He managed a team of about 13 aspiring journalists, including correspondents in Colombia, France, Mexico, the United States and Venezuela.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The MDC Journalism Speaker Series was launched in February of 2008 to provide students an opportunity to meet and network with working journalists. To date, more than 82 journalists have participated in the series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
