{"id":39076,"date":"2025-02-24T18:01:44","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T23:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=39076"},"modified":"2025-03-03T00:27:32","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T05:27:32","slug":"department-of-education-is-being-diminished-and-so-is-our-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/department-of-education-is-being-diminished-and-so-is-our-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Department Of Education Is Being Diminished And So Is Our Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is 2025, and a new administration has taken control of one of the most influential organizations that affects students nationwide\u2014the United States Department of Education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/21\/1232862569\/what-happens-if-the-education-department-is-abolished\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes in the federal government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may seem routine for most students, President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has promised to eliminate the department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DOE provides many benefits that my peers and I have relied on throughout our academic careers. As students, we must be aware of the department\u2019s role in our lives and the potential impact its removal can have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., education is primarily a state and local responsibility while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/explainers\/what-does-the-us-government-do\/agency\/us-department-of-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DOE plays a supportive role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It sets educational standards, provides resources and holds schools accountable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The department also promotes equal access to education by enforcing anti-discrimination laws that protect students based on gender, race and disability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, on Feb. 17, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-cuts-over-600-million-divisive-teacher-training-grants#:~:text=U.S.%20Department%20of%20Education%20Cuts%20$600%20Million%20in%20Grants%20Used,Centering%20Equity%20in%20the%20Classroom%E2%80%9D;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DOE announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cit has terminated [more than] $600 million in grants to institutions and nonprofits \u2026 to train teachers and education agencies on divisive ideologies. Training materials included inappropriate and unnecessary topics such as Critical Race Theory; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; social justice activism; \u201canti-racism\u201d; and instruction on white privilege and white supremacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it manages the Free Application for Federal Student Aid\u2014the application for federal financial aid. Annually, it distributes billions of dollars to students, schools and other academic programs through pell grants, loans and work study opportunities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those resources help middle and low-income students receive an equal and affordable education. Millions of students rely on that aid to get a higher education that would otherwise be out of reach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the current administration actively declaring war on the DOE, we must ask: \u201cWhat happens if the department is abolished?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dismantling the department would significantly disrupt the educational system. Its duties would most likely be redistributed among federal agencies or legislative areas of the state or local governments, and some programs might be scrapped altogether in the name of government efficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This shift from federal to state or local government would be chaotic. All administration of FAFSA and the distribution of federal aid could be disrupted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of federal oversight would weaken civil and special education rights, especially in states where unsupportive laws are already being enforced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating the DOE would give states more financial responsibility, strain academic resources and allow the private industry sector to lead. This has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/ed-overview\/federal-role-in-education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically led to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> greater costs and less security for students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The department plays a vital role in supporting students, teachers and schools.
