{"id":39116,"date":"2025-03-05T11:07:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T16:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=39116"},"modified":"2025-03-07T01:41:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T06:41:50","slug":"martial-arts-community-mourns-the-loss-of-judo-jack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/martial-arts-community-mourns-the-loss-of-judo-jack\/","title":{"rendered":"Martial Arts Community Mourns The Loss Of Judo Jack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charles Brown met Leyshon \u2018Jack\u2019 Williams at North Campus the same way hundreds of others did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was walking through the hallway, that&#8217;s where Jack was handing out flyers and promoting [his judo] class,\u201d said Brown, who eventually became Williams&#8217; student and assistant. \u201cThat&#8217;s how I met him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judo Jack, as he was affectionately known, was a walking judo billboard. For decades, he peddled his courses one leaflet at a time in front of Scott Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He enrolled hundreds of students into his life\u2019s passion\u2014judo\u2014during a nearly 60-year career at Miami Dade College that included stints as a full-time professor, adjunct and coach.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe would compete, we would train hard, sweat and kill ourselves on the mat, and then we\u2019d go out and have a beer and party,\u201d Hector Estevez recalled. \u201cWe were a family. We all loved each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 16, the 71-year-old Estevez was one of several former students who passionately eulogized Williams in front of family and friends at his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dignitymemorial.com\/obituaries\/north-miami-fl\/leyshon-williams-12242080\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">viewing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Caballero Rivero Southern in North Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams died on Feb. 10 at Jackson North Medical Center from natural causes. He was 95.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the ceremony, Williams was posthumously promoted to 9th Dan, one of the highest ranks in the judo belt system awarded by the United States Judo Association. It was presented to his family by his former student and Olympian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhadi_Ferguson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhadi Ferguson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The viewing ended with a final Ritsu-rei\u2014a standing bow performed by judokas after sparring\u2014for the beloved sensei.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Jack was so knowledgeable in the art, tough as nails, but he had a great heart,\u201d said Candido Ramos, another one of Williams&#8217; former students. \u201cIt was a blessing to train under him.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The Early Years<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams was born in November of 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was raised on a farm by his parents Leyshon Williams and Dorothy Roberts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The youngster cultivated a love for animals on the farm. He took care of chickens, horses and birds. His best friend was his dog.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up in the Great Depression was not easy for young Jack. His parents worked multiple jobs to support the family and couldn\u2019t spend a lot of time with him. He eventually attended a boarding school for a year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Williams was 14, his family moved to Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After moving out from his parents\u2019 home, he began working as a dance instructor in hotels in Miami Beach. He slept in cabanas in exchange for the lessons he taught.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1960, Williams joined the National Guard for three years, before being honorably discharged in 1963.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He earned an associate degree in criminology from North Campus, a business administration degree from the University of Miami and a master\u2019s degree in parks and recreation administration from Florida International University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Judo Journey<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many theories as to how Jack fell for judo. Some believe it was his tough upbringing. Others point to his time in the National Guard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what\u2019s abundantly clear is his passion for the sport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began practicing judo in 1955, and opened the Miami School of Judo in North Miami two years later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams&#8217; understanding of judo was revolutionized when he met sensei Paul Takeshita in 1959. Takeshita immigrated to the United States from Japan during World War II, after he was placed in an internment camp with his family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe new concepts and theory of judo [Takeshita] instilled in me are still constantly successful principles and theories I use,\u201d Williams wrote in a timeline he created about his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams competed throughout the 60s and 70s, winning several championships in Florida and the Southeast United States. In 1974, he placed second in the National Amateur Athletic Union\u2019s 205-pound division and in the under-master division championships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He took several trips to Japan in the 60s and 70s to study at the legendary Kodokan Judo Institute, known as the original school of judo. He learned various techniques and katas\u2014choreographed fighting forms\u2014including goshin-jutsu, katame no kata and kime no kata.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack then, it wasn&#8217;t normal for foreigners to be in the Kodokan or in Japan, learning the arts,\u201d Brown said. \u201cSo for him to go to Japan, that was special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his time in Japan, Williams also studied at the Tokyo and Oimachi Police Departments, learning techniques only the police were allowed to use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He would later teach officers from the City of Miami Police Department the skills he learned, especially taiho-jutsu, a technique used to take someone down using minimal force. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39121\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39121\" src=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Jack-Williams14.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nattily Dressed: Pictured is Jack Williams in 1975 wearing a North Campus sports jacket. PHOTO COURTESY OF FALCON TIMES ARCHIVES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 60s, Williams began teaching judo classes at the North and South campuses with the approval of then-athletic director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/mdc-baseball-legend-demie-mainieri-passes-away-at-90\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demie Mainieri<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During his tenure at MDC, his judo teams won <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcathletics.com\/for_recruits\/National_Championship_Titles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a> junior college<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> national championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams was a full-time professor at North Campus from 1969 through 2002. He coached the judo squad until the mid-90s and continued teaching as an adjunct until about 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a sensei, Williams was known for his fierceness and commitment to his students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was revered in the martial arts world. Williams was inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1981 and the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1993.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judo Jack distinguished himself as a central figure in the South Florida judo circuit, offering instruction at 13 recreational centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Every judoka that was raised in Miami in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s owe part of them to Jack Williams,&#8221; Estevez said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Meeting His Wife<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1992, Williams met his wife Juana at a Canadian dance club in Hallandale Beach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting almost didn\u2019t happen because Juana was skeptical about joining her friends for a night out on the town. She heard the club, which was known for ballroom dancing, attracted an older crowd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the hesitation, Juana went. She caught Williams\u2019 eye and the seasoned dance instructor made his move.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe invited me to dance, I told him I didn\u2019t know how to dance and so he told me he\u2019ll teach me how to dance, and so we went 1-2-3, 1-2-3,\u201d Juana said. \u201cThat\u2019s when our love story began.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo began dating shortly after. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They married in 1994 and were together for 31 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Off The Mat<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his spare time, Williams enjoyed staying fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe used to always swim, always worked out, he was always in great shape,\u201d said Tim Littlefield, a veteran of the Miami Police Department who once studied judo under Williams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The judo aficionado also had an affinity for a good colada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe lived one street south of me&#8230; and I used to go by and we used to go over to the cafe and get some Cuban coffee and guava [pastries],\u201d Littlefield added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in the end, his heart always came back to judo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I want him to be remembered as somebody who always followed his passion and his dream, and who tried his hardest to keep it going,&#8221; said Williams\u2019 stepdaughter, Wendy Guzman. &#8220;He persevered as much as he could in life, and even to the end, it was something that he carried with him because judo was one of the loves of his life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams is survived by his wife, Juana Williams, their children John, Patty, Moses, Wendy, and Angelica, and his grandchildren, Shon, Sacha, Isabella and Astrid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
