Ron DeSantis signed bill <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2025C\/2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 2-C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into law. The legislation, which aligns with the Trump administration\u2019s crackdown on illegal immigration, increases penalties for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and allocates nearly $300 million toward illegal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ogletree.com\/insights-resources\/blog-posts\/florida-enacts-immigration-related-laws-expanding-law-enforcement-restricting-in-state-tuition-and-increasing-criminal-penalties\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigration enforcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis budget means that police officers will be essentially becoming additional ICE agents,\u201d\u00a0 said Dariel Gomez, the Miami-Dade organizer for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclufl.org\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Sandra Fish Mathurin, the director of services for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaimmigrant.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida Immigrant Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students told her that ICE agents were seen at Homestead Campus a few weeks ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Alejandro D. Gonz\u00e1lez, the interim vice president of marketing and communications at Miami Dade College, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via email on March 8 : <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have not [had] ICE agents at Homestead Campus.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reached out to ICE\u2019s Miami Field Office and Office of Public Affairs via phone and email, but no response has been provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the national immigration crackdown, justice organizations have created the \u201cKnow Your Rights\u201d movement to spread awareness of how to proceed if someone is approached by ICE agents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes guidelines, free legal assistance, presentations and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaimmigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/KYR-English.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Cards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u2014small cards that contain the basic rights every person is entitled to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a summary of some of the organizations tips:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>ON CAMPUS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ICE agents can conduct interrogations in open spaces of an MDC campus, you have the following rights:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right to remain silent:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If an officer questions you, you may ask if you are free to leave. If the officer says no, clearly state you are exercising your right to remain silent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right to refuse a search:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No police officer can search you without your consent or legitimate cause.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Right to legal representation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If detained, you have the right to request a lawyer and make a phone call. Do not sign any documents or discuss your situation with anyone other than a lawyer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>WHILE DRIVING<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay calm and pull over safely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower your window and keep your hands visible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide your driver\u2019s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance when requested.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are not required to answer questions about your immigration status or nationality.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>AT HOME<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remain inside your home. Do not allow officers to enter unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If officers say they have a warrant, request that they slide it under the door to verify its legitimacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask the officers to identify themselves and show their credentials through a peephole or window.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If officers enter your home, do not resist or run.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In every situation, it\u2019s crucial to maintain composure and proceed with caution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe will discourage [people] from running, because that can give law enforcement officials cause to pursue you, and it can also put you in potential danger,\u201d said Evelyn Wiese, a litigation attorney for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aijustice.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans for Immigrant Justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planning ahead and accessing available resources is also essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans for Immigrants Justice and the Florida Immigration Coalition, both non-profit organizations, have been actively advocating against deportation operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida Immigrant Coalition hosts public \u201cKnow Your Rights\u201d presentations every Wednesday, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaimmigrant.org\/events\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">virtually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or in-person, at 561 N.E. 79th St. Suite 400. The sessions offer free legal advice and help attendees develop action plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe overall goal is one, to break fear,\u201d Fish Mathurin said. \u201cWhen people are equipped with those resources, they&#8217;re able to live their life and continue to do what they need to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the ACLU\u00a0 will be tabling from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the courtyard next to Student Life at Eduardo J.
