On Jan. 24, singer <\/span>Gracie Abrams<\/span><\/a> announced alternative\/indie artist <\/span>Dora Jar<\/span><\/a> as the opening act for her <\/span>European branch<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>The Secret of Us Tour<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although most fans, including Abrams herself, expressed excitement about Jar opening the upcoming shows, some fans took to social media to express disappointment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One fan, under the pseudonym <\/span>Dexter Morgan<\/span><\/a>, went as far as to create a <\/span>change.org<\/span><\/a> petition titled \u201cReplace Dora Jar as the Opening Act for <\/span>The Secret of Us<\/span><\/i> Europe Tour.\u201d The petition went viral, with some fans agreeing with Morgan and others defending Jar on social media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The petition claimed that Jar\u2019s music was too slow-paced and unpopular to open for an \u201cupbeat\u201d artist like Abrams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the petition, Morgan stated: \u201cWe are perplexed as we do not recognize her, and with less than two weeks till the tour, it\u2019s virtually impossible to familiarize ourselves with her slow-paced songs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Morgan doubled-down by citing a <\/span>Billboard<\/span><\/i><\/a> article stating: \u201cupbeat opening acts are essential to the overall concert experience as they set the tone for the headlining act and help in keeping the audience\u2019s energy\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Billboard <\/span><\/a>clarified that the \u201ccited\u201d article never existed\u2014leading some to <\/span>speculate <\/span><\/a>that the petition was written using AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Abrams later<\/span> responded<\/span><\/a> to the petition on Instagram, calling it \u201cwildly uncool and bizarre.\u201d The singer continued to defend Jar by stating: \u201cI\u2019ve only seen everyone\u2019s total excitement and I couldn\u2019t be luckier or prouder to share a stage with this talented wonder.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jar herself also<\/span> responded<\/span><\/a> with a post on X, expressing gratitude for Abram\u2019s support and for fans who have continued to support her. The post read: \u201cHate comes with the job, the truth is this is the biggest outpouring of love I\u2019ve ever received from a fanbase who is still unfamiliar with me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The artist even poked fun at the petition, jokingly <\/span>tweeting<\/span><\/a>: \u201cSigned the petition but rehearsing these songs just in case I remain the opener! Love u Dexter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Controversies like this are becoming more common, partly due to the rise of fandom culture and its increasing toxicity\u2014not only to regular people\u2014but also to artists themselves. Violence, bullying and other condemnable actions are becoming more common in large fandoms, especially those made up of young fans.<\/span><\/p>\n

The disappointment that an \u201cunknown\u201d artist is opening <\/span>The Secret of Us Tour<\/span><\/i> is also inherently hypocritical, considering that Gracie Abrams herself was widely discovered by <\/span>opening<\/span><\/a> Taylor Swift\u2019s<\/span> The Era\u2019s Tour.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

While this specific incident was comical and unserious in comparison to other instances of extreme fan behavior, it illustrates the increasing entitlement of fans.
