Opening for The Black Keys last year did more than remind the U.S. how great the Arctic Monkeys are, it influenced the UK\u2019s indie rock band\u2019s fifth album, <\/span>AM<\/span><\/i>, for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n

With falsetto backing vocals and bluesy riffs, the Arctic Monkeys highly resemble the American garage rock duo on <\/span>AM<\/span><\/i>, particularly on the opening track, \u201cDo I Wanna Know?\u201d in which lead singer Alex Turner suavely sings over the pulsating rhythm, \u201c\u2019Cause there\u2019s this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow and I play it on repeat\/Until I fall asleep.\u201d Play this song directly after The Black Keys\u2019 \u201cEverlasting Light\u201d, and you\u2019ve got yourself two aching love songs back to back.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, most of the songs on here are aching love songs. With titles such as \u201cR U Mine\u201d and \u201cSnap Out Of It\u201d, nearly every track is drenched in seduction and wanting what you can\u2019t have <\/span>\u2014<\/span>or what you did have, but suddenly lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

Formed in Sheffield, England in 2002, the Arctic Monkeys consists of Turner, lead and rhythm guitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Nick O\u2019Malley and drummer Matt Helders. The band\u2019s 2006 breakthrough album, <\/span>Whatever People Say I Am, That\u2019s What I\u2019m Not<\/span><\/i>, was the fastest selling debut album in British history. Though this album was technically the U.S\u2019s introduction to the band, <\/span>AM<\/span><\/i> charted higher in the U.S. than any of their other albums to date.<\/span><\/p>\n

AM <\/span><\/i>alludes imagery to everything that happens when the sun goes down: wild, rainy Tuesday nights filled with wearing leather jackets and sunglasses indoors while drinking whiskey and making 3 a.m phone calls to lovers. \u201cIt\u2019s a really cool, sexy after-midnight record,\u201d said Josh Homme in an interview with New Musical Express. Homme, lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age, who not only contributed vocals to \u201cKnee Socks\u201d and \u201cOne for the Road\u201d but also covered an acoustic live version of the single \u201cWhy\u2019d You Only Call Me When You\u2019re High?\u201d for the BBC Radio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Turner admittedly got the idea for the title of the album from the Velvet Underground, who titled their 1985 album <\/span>VU<\/span><\/i>. He described the album as having more of a hip-hop feel, which can certainly be heard on tracks such as \u201cArabella\u201d and \u201cFireside\u201d, in which the heavy beats accompany the guitar riffs perfectly. In contrast, some songs are much more mellow and swooning, most notably \u201cNo. 1 Party Anthem\u201d featuring pianist Tom Noakes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those who love <\/span>AM<\/span><\/i> will also find great pleasure in the secret gem the deluxe LP features, \u201cStop the World I Wanna Get Off With You\u201d. You\u2019ll find the Arctic Monkeys\u2019 train keeps on rolling.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
