Two weeks later, they were honored with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tellyawards.com\/winners\/2025\/television\/general-live-events-experiences\/video-game-concert-2024\/339991\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telly Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The awards recognize excellence across multimedia communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDC-TV\u2019s awards were for the following programs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Gold Communicator Award in Features: Events and Live-streaming for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video Game Concert 2024.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Gold Communicator Award for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public Service &amp; Activism Award for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black History Month<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Silver Communicator Award in Social Media: Games &amp; Gaming for<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Video Game Concert 2024.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Silver Telly Award in Live Events &amp; Experiences for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video Game Concert 2024.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese awards are never guaranteed,\u201d said MDC-TV Executive Director and Senior Producer Ariel Rubalcava. \u201c[This] puts our college station in the same conversation as major networks, proving that educational content can compete at the highest level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OVkYLu1zlvs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video Game Concert 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 27-minute long film that features a live performance by Miami Dade College students, includes orchestral music from video games such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario, Final Fantasy and Halo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, which has had seven editions dating back to 2015, was directed by Rubalcava in collaboration with orchestral conductor Alberto Bade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It began as a project for students to showcase music from their favorite video games and has developed into an award-winning final performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The operation starts six months before the actual concert and involves projection technicians, art engineers, video engineers, audio technicians and around 60 musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe like to think of the concert as the ultimate test for the students,\u201d Rubalcava said. \u201cIt\u2019s always exciting, recognition like this validates the passion and hard work our team puts in behind the scenes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s rendition will be performed on Saturday, June 21 at the Finn-Con: Anime &amp; Gaming Expo at the Lehman Theater, Room 5120, at North Campus from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. It marks the program\u2019s 10th anniversary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qY-YkLugQp8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black History Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a montage released in February of 2024 to celebrate the influence of the African American community in show business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tony Leal, a producer with MDC-TV, directed the minute-long video.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt really happy because it is always special to be recognized for your individual work,\u201d Leal said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The production features African American influences who set a precedent for future generations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poet Gwendolyn Brooks\u2014who was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize\u2014and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">singer Aretha Franklin, the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted the African American community to see their historical legacy in entertainment,\u201d Leal said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDC-TV can be found on Comcast channel 78, Atlantic Broadband channel 78, AT&amp;T U-Verse channel 99 and their <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@MDC-TV\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YouTube channel<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the interviews for this story was conducted in Spanish.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>Click<\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"><i> here<\/i><\/a><\/span><i> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
