{"id":39931,"date":"2025-08-04T17:48:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-04T21:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=39931"},"modified":"2025-08-20T21:26:53","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T01:26:53","slug":"freedom-tower-to-reopen-after-more-than-30-million-in-renovations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/freedom-tower-to-reopen-after-more-than-30-million-in-renovations\/","title":{"rendered":"Freedom Tower To Reopen After More Than $30 Million In Renovations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the last century, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdc.edu\/freedomtower\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freedom Tower<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has stood in the heart of downtown Miami as a symbol of the city\u2019s origins and the enduring spirit of its community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally built in 1925 as the headquarters for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a now defunct local newspaper, the 289-foot structure<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the tallest in the south at that time<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">later served as a gateway to freedom for thousands of Cuban exiles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The national historic landmark, which was designed to mirror a Spanish Cathedral, has been closed for two years as it undergoes a more than $30 million facelift that includes fixing flooding issues in the basement, repairing columns and improving accessibility for people with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the historic tower is set to reopen in September\u2014a specific date has not been given\u2014 two months after its centennial anniversary, which was officially on July 25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe tower is embedded in history,\u201d said Paul George, resident historian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/historymiami.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HistoryMiami Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt was important that it be restored and recognized for what it has represented for 100 years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Funding for the renovations included<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/governor-pledges-25-million-to-renovate-freedom-tower\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a $25 million pledge by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in November 2021, separate $500,000 grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the State of Florida\u2019s Cultural Facilities Program in 2023, and a $5 million donation from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knight Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe worked with crews to expand accessibility, modernize elevators and bring the building to today\u2019s standards,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Carla Chicu\u00e9n, executive director of cultural affairs at Miami Dade College.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c[We also restored] some of the original features such as the tiles and lighting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The building traces its roots to 1925 when it served as a news tower for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami News<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was owned by former Ohio governor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and businessman James Cox. It relocated in 1957.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five years later the building became a base for the Cuban Refugee Assistance Program that helped Cuban immigrants leaving their homeland after the communist revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 1962 to 1974, the refuge\u2014as it was commonly known among Cuban exiles\u2014processed more than 650,000 Cubans, providing them with food, medical attention and shelter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That era earned the building its name: the Freedom Tower. It became a guiding light for future generations of the Magic City.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those is Magda Castineyra, the dean of The Honors College, who came through the tower in 1967 when she was 5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI arrived in this country with my parents through the freedom flights\u2026 we had lost everything,\u201d Castineyra said. \u201cThe Freedom Tower was the first place all the newly arrived would go\u2026they helped my father find work and gave us a home. The tower became a light for my family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1974, the number of Cuban exiles arriving in Miami had diminished, and the tower was sold by the federal government to private owners. For decades, it had various owners and was nearly demolished.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was until 1997, when it was purchased by Jorge Mas Canosa, founder of the Cuban American National Foundation. He passed away two months later, and his family sold the tower in 2004 to real estate developer Pedro Martin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year later, the edifice was donated to MDC. For the past few years, the College has been busy revamping the tower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under MDC\u2019s ownership, the Freedom Tower has become an epicenter of culture in South Florida. It houses the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moadmdc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Museum of Art and Design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where local artists showcase their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple historical exhibits such as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refuge<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> and Reflection<\/em> will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">celebrate Miami\u2019s heritage by providing insight into the immigrant experience with more than 350 testimonials from locals whose lives have been impacted by the tower.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An old typesetting room of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami News <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was chosen to honor the Knight Foundation\u2019s support in the form of renaming it The Knight Skylight Gallery. The gallery will <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feature presentations that showcase the sound and vibrance of Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, the College is planning a milestone celebration honoring Cuban singer Celia Cruz and a FIFA exhibition showcasing Miami as one of the hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freedom Tower has always represented the same ethos that MDC has always carried, which has been a gateway to opportunity and a welcoming space where everyone can find inspiration,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; Chicu\u00e9n said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>Click<\/i><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.us19.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=4fc6146412415baee32007fd7&amp;id=b5cd3712dc\"><i> here<\/i><\/a><\/span><i> to subscribe to our bi-weekly newsletter, The Hammerhead.
