For decades, the punk rock scene was known for being a male-dominated space, defined by rebellious ideals and a rejection of mainstream trends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite this, women managed to carve out a space in this crowd, but not without its challenges. The trailblazers faced violence, sexualization and a lack of support.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1991, a group of frustrated female fans held a meeting in Olympia, Washington to talk about the overwhelming amount of misogyny in the punk scene. The meeting marked the beginning of a new culture, characterized by feminist ideals and cut-and-paste zines-\u2013the Riot Grrrl movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The attitude of the punk and alternative rockstars, their unique sound and do-it-yourself creativity served as the inspiration for the new culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The figurehead of this budding scene was Kathleen Hanna, the frontwoman of bands <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Le Tigre<\/span><\/i>. Her story in the movement began when she met <\/span>Sonic Youth <\/span><\/i><\/a>frontwoman Kim Gordon at a <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i> show in the early 90s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanna was drawn to Gordon\u2019s talents\u2014her skills on the bass and her role as a visual artist, bassist and lead vocalist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gordon was an unwavering supporter of <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i>, especially during a time when the band received a lot of criticism for their perceived misandrist attitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two rockstars formed a friendship by rejecting the status quo while upholding feminist principles. Gordon\u2019s androgynous style in a male-dominated field made her stand out, she was more than just a girl in a band.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her band, <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i>, was founded in New York in 1981. Early on, they gained a following through a growing presence on college and independent radio stations. Their big break came with the release of their fifth studio album, <\/span>Daydream Nation<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1994, <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i>\u2019s music video<\/span> Bull In The Heather<\/span><\/i> featured Hanna, who is seen dancing. The video helped <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i> gain a mainstream audience and pushed the Riot Grrrl movement to the forefront.<\/span><\/p>\n

A year later, <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i> opened for <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i> during the band\u2019s <\/span>Washing Machine <\/span><\/i>tour in North America. That was a crucial point in the rise of the movement. It brought in many new fans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the scene\u2019s growing support, the backlash continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1991, <\/span>Bikini Kill <\/span><\/i>went on an American east coast tour alongside <\/span>Bratmobile<\/span><\/i>, another band from the scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During a New York City tour, members of both bands overheard the audience whispering rumors of <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i>\u2019s Thurston Moore making an appearance, saying it would finally make the newfound subgenre \u201ccool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At a later show, <\/span>Bratmobile<\/span><\/i> member Molly Neuman read the insults out loud before <\/span>Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i> debuted their new song, <\/span>Thurston Hearts The Who<\/span><\/i><\/a>. The song criticized the \u201ccool kid\u201d\u00a0 trend that said if <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i> liked a band, then all of their fans had to like it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite not falling under the culture\u2019s label, <\/span>Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i>\u2019s support and influence in the <\/span>Riot Grrrl<\/span><\/i> scene is undeniable and helped amplify women\u2019s voices throughout music.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
