The trailblazers faced violence, sexualization and a lack of support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1991, a group of frustrated female fans held a meeting in Olympia, Washington to talk about the overwhelming amount of misogyny in the punk scene. The meeting marked the beginning of a new culture, characterized by feminist ideals and cut-and-paste zines-\u2013the Riot Grrrl movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attitude of the punk and alternative rockstars, their unique sound and do-it-yourself creativity served as the inspiration for the new culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The figurehead of this budding scene was Kathleen Hanna, the frontwoman of bands <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Tigre<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Her story in the movement began when she met <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/5UqTO8smerMvxHYA5xsXb6\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Youth <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frontwoman Kim Gordon at a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show in the early 90s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanna was drawn to Gordon\u2019s talents\u2014her skills on the bass and her role as a visual artist, bassist and lead vocalist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gordon was an unwavering supporter of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially during a time when the band received a lot of criticism for their perceived misandrist attitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two rockstars formed a friendship by rejecting the status quo while upholding feminist principles. Gordon\u2019s androgynous style in a male-dominated field made her stand out, she was more than just a girl in a band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her band, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was founded in New York in 1981. Early on, they gained a following through a growing presence on college and independent radio stations. Their big break came with the release of their fifth studio album, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daydream Nation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1994, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s music video<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bull In The Heather<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featured Hanna, who is seen dancing. The video helped <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gain a mainstream audience and pushed the Riot Grrrl movement to the forefront.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A year later, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> opened for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the band\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washing Machine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tour in North America. That was a crucial point in the rise of the movement. It brought in many new fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the scene\u2019s growing support, the backlash continued.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1991, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went on an American east coast tour alongside <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bratmobile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another band from the scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a New York City tour, members of both bands overheard the audience whispering rumors of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic Youth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s Thurston Moore making an appearance, saying it would finally make the newfound subgenre \u201ccool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a later show, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bratmobile<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> member Molly Neuman read the insults out loud before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bikini Kill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debuted their new song, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cKVH6_zIyXI\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thurston Hearts The Who<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
