At the beginning of the year, North Campus alumnus Shane Ragoonan was still part of the band that ignited his musical passion\u2014<\/span>Galaxy Beat<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But after discussions with his wife, Rosa, about his future as a musician, he left the band for the second time since 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife always told me\u2014and she said this with all due respect because she loved the band\u2014\u2018If you ever want to go high, if you ever want to succeed, if you want to go to that next level in your musical career, you can\u2019t be in this band,\u2019\u201d Ragoonan said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 31-year-old decided to fly solo, releasing his debut EP\u2014<\/span>Who Is MC Ragoonan?<\/span><\/i>\u2014on his birthday, Oct. 11.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heavily immersed in hip-hop and rap, Ragoonan released the project\u2019s first single, <\/span>Life is Beautiful<\/span><\/i><\/a>, in June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t, you know, <\/span>Galaxy Beat<\/span><\/i> or anything else, this is me,\u201d Ragoonan said. \u201cThis is raw, this is who I am, you know?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To bring the EP to fruition, Ragoonan recruited the help of a high school friend, artistically known as McFly, and his cousin-in-law, Jean-Phillippe \u201cPhil Jr.\u201d Roche, who mixed and mastered songs.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they hear it for the first time, and hopefully the 20th and 100th time, that it\u2019s just something they can connect to,\u201d Phil Jr. said. \u201cYou know, some people run parallels to [his] experiences and they don\u2019t really know how to express [them]. I think Shane\u2019s done a great job in being able to do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Growing up, music was a big part of Ragoonan\u2019s life. His father was a rapper, DJ and dancer and his grandfather, Glenn, was a musician. When they were kids, Ragoonan and his younger brother, Shandon, pretended to be their favorite hip-hop and rock artists, including <\/span>Nirvana<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Alice In Chains<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>DMX<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>OutKast<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While in high school at Miami Lakes Educational Center, he recorded music during his classes and released the tracks on SoundCloud under various names including King Tut, Papa Shango and $hane.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, while Ragoonan was a student at North Campus, he joined forces with two friends to create <\/span>Galaxy Beat<\/span><\/i>, a rock band that dabbled in rap, funk and punk. He was a songwriter, vocalist and keyboardist under the alias <\/span>Kemosabe<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They performed at venues such as Estefan Kitchen, Churchill\u2019s Pub, Thank You Miami and North Campus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After leaving Galaxy Beat, Ragoonan was hesitant to pursue a solo career. Doubt filled his heart and he wondered how the public might receive his work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife knows that I am a huge Ozzy Osborne fan. She told me, \u2018Listen, Ozzy did not become famous by staying in Black Sabbath, he went out, became solo, and he became an even bigger artist. Remember that,\u2019\u201d Ragoonan said. \u201cThat just always calmed me down.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2026, <\/span>MC Ragoonan <\/span><\/i>plans to release his first full-length album, titled <\/span>Opulence Season. <\/span><\/i>He also hopes to perform again for the first time since last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s just so much emotion that goes into it, it\u2019s me betting on myself for the first time,\u201d Ragoonan said. \u201cAnd I say me, but it takes a village. […] So you know, in a weird way, I am solo, but I\u2019ve got a whole team behind me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
