The 90s was a thriving time for artists with unconventional sounds, such as Jeff Buckley, Pavement, Liz Phair and Sonic Youth\u2014but none brought a more unique sound than indie-rock musician <\/span>Elliott Smith<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Known for his layered vocal harmony through double-tracking, Smith\u2019s style is easily distinguishable with his lo-fi melancholic sound, whispery vocals and lyrical depth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith grew up in Omaha, Nebraska in the 1970s. His parents divorced when he was 6 months old, so he spent his early childhood with his mother.<\/span><\/p>\n

While living with his mom, he developed a love for music, learning to play the piano at 9 before dedicating himself to the guitar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As a teen, Smith moved to his father\u2019s home in Portland, Oregon, where he met American musician Tony Lash and they formed the new wave band <\/span>Stranger Than Fiction<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his time in the band, Smith decided to go by the name <\/span>Elliott Smith <\/span><\/i>because he thought Steven sounded \u201cbookish\u201d and that Steve was a jock\u2019s name.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith and Lash later formed <\/span>Heatmiser<\/span><\/i>, an indie rock band that lasted from 1991 to 1996.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unsatisfied with the music from <\/span>Heatmiser<\/span><\/i>, Smith embarked on a solo career that changed the trajectory of his life and career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He released several solo albums from 1994 until 2004\u2014a year after his death\u2014but the album that brought him to the mainstream was<\/span> Either\/Or<\/span><\/i><\/a>, released in 1997.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album was inspired by Smith\u2019s love for philosophy and music. It shares a name with a book by Danish theologian and existentialist philosopher S\u00f8ren Kierkegaard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>Either\/Or<\/span><\/i>, Smith uses double tracking, layering instruments and vocals to mimic the sound of a full band.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That practice has influenced several artists, including <\/span>Phoebe Bridgers<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Billie Eillish<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Frank Ocean<\/span><\/i>, who sampled Smith\u2019s song<\/span> A Fond Farewell<\/span><\/i> in <\/span>Seigfried, <\/span><\/i>a track from his 2016 album <\/span>Blonde<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Either\/Or<\/span><\/i> explores themes, ranging from Smith\u2019s experiences with failed relationships to his subtle anti-capitalist views. His music is easily digestible for listeners in need of raw, heartfelt lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the sixth track, <\/span>No Name #5,<\/span><\/i> he says: \u201cGot bitten fingernails and a head full of the past, and everybody\u2019s gone at last. A sweet, sweet smile that’s fading fast, \u2018cause everybody\u2019s gone at last.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On <\/span>Angeles<\/span><\/i>, Smith sings: \u201cPicking up the ticket shows there\u2019s money to be made. Go on, lose the gamble, that’s the history of the trade. Did you add up all the cards left to play zero?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Acclaimed filmmaker Gus Van Sant was drawn to Smith\u2019s melancholic yet hopeful sound, using several of his songs in his Oscar-winning movie <\/span>Good Will Hunting<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Van Sant also commissioned one of Smith\u2019s songs for the film, <\/span>Miss Misery. <\/span><\/i>That exposure skyrocketed Smith to stardom, and gave him international notoriety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>Either\/Or<\/span><\/i>\u00a0 is best known for its soft, hazy instruments and airy vocals filled with moments of sorrow, it ends on a different tone with <\/span>Say Yes<\/span><\/i>\u2014an optimistic love ballad that Smith created in less than five minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
