{"id":40875,"date":"2025-11-24T08:17:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T13:17:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=40875"},"modified":"2025-11-27T10:33:46","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:33:46","slug":"miami-book-fair-takes-over-downtown-during-42nd-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-book-fair-takes-over-downtown-during-42nd-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"Miami Book Fair Takes Over Downtown During 42nd Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Nicole Vergara and Yazid Guelida<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Miami Book Fair, the Magic City\u2019s most diverse and largest literary festival, flooded the streets of downtown from November 16-23 during its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/miami-book-fair-returns-to-wolfson-campus-for-its-42nd-edition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42nd rendition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Wolfson Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It featured more than 500 renowned authors, artists and writers from more than 35 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Festivities popped off with the Jump &#8216;N Funk afrobeat block party led by four-time Grammy nominee Kenny Dope, accompanied with visuals by The Marksmen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the eight days of celebration, fairgoers got the opportunity to meet with their favorite writers and attend panels while enjoying live music and good food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This year has been really spectacular,\u201d said Mitchell Kaplan, co-founder of the Book Fair. \u201cThe authors have been varied and different, from photography to brain surgery, to country music to solar energy, it&#8217;s all been amazing.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fair\u2019s annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamibookfair.com\/program\/evenings-with\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evenings With<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> series began on Nov. 17, offering in-depth conversations with distinguished authors and artists such as Bill McKibben, Kenny Chesney and Arthur Sze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Learning the personality of the writers and getting to know them a little more personally than just their works is very special to me,&#8221; said Laine Shakeridge, who attended the Fair on Nov. 19. &#8220;I like coming to these talks, to hear people and get to know them a little bit.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several literary showcases also took place, featuring authors from different cultures, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamibookfair.com\/program\/iberoamerican-author-program-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IberoAmerican Authors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One event\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamibookfair.com\/event\/ensayo-y-poesia-dos-nuevos-libros-de-editorial-casa-vacia-muestra-de-catalogo-y-encuentro-de-autores-ficcion-y-no-ficcion\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensayo y Poes\u00eda<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014featured a panel of Cuban artists from the publishing company Casa Vacia. It included writer and actress Rosie Inguanzo, poet Pablo De Cuba Soria, writer Jose Prats Sariol and violinist Alfredo Triff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFighting for more Cuban voices and more of our personal stories in the world of literature brings me a lot of happiness and pride,\u201d said Mercedes Gonzales, who attended the panel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Nov. 20, photographer Sally Mann presented her latest book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art Work: On the Creative Life. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It highlights the challenges and joys of creativity, the importance of risk-taking and the role of luck in the creative journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I think listening to photographers that have been documenting and taking their work as artists very seriously is important, as they bring fresh, new perspectives,&#8221; said Marite Iglesias, a curator and gallerist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, the annual three-day Street Fair began. The Kyriakides Plaza, along with strips of Northeast Second Avenue and Northeast Fourth Street, was lined with the Fair\u2019s signature colorful tents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authors provided signed copies of their books, while vendors sold pastries, jewelry and hand-made products. More than 30 local restaurants hawked their food at the Street Fair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Alley also returned throughout the weekend, bringing plenty of story-telling, performances, art and live music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Book Foundation presented several nominees for the 2025 National Book Award for Translated Literature during a panel. Honorees included Jazmina Barrera, Gabriela Cabez\u00f3n Camara and Hamid Ismailov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The diversity in Miami is so profound that when we program the Book Fair, we have to make sure that it&#8217;s really something for everyone,\u201d Kaplan said. \u201cAnd that&#8217;s not only with the authors, but when you come to the Street Fair, when you look at what we do for the children and young adults, it&#8217;s just a glorious coming together of community.
