Three years ago, the Pok\u00e9mon video game series hit a low point.<\/p>\n
The release of Pok\u00e9mon Scarlet & Pok\u00e9mon Violet received mixed reviews from critics. The issues plaguing those releases frustrated the gaming world\u2014their potential was ruined by the fact that they were rushed.<\/p>\n
Pressure began to build on Nintendo, The Pok\u00e9mon Company and Game Freak. To maintain the trust of their loyal fanbase, they had to release a high-quality video game.<\/p>\n
The franchise aimed to bounce back with Pok\u00e9mon Legends: Z-A. It was released on Oct. 16 for both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems.<\/p>\n
It takes place in the fictional Kalos region, five years after the events of 2013\u2019s Pok\u00e9mon: X and Pok\u00e9mon: Y. The protagonist goes on vacation in Lumiose City, which is inspired by Paris.<\/p>\n
They soon find themselves a part of the city\u2019s urban redevelopment plan. The corporation responsible for this plan\u2014Quasartico Inc.\u2014aims to redesign the city so both humans and Pok\u00e9mon can live together happily.<\/p>\n
Players must pick from three starter Pok\u00e9mon: Chikorita, Tepig or Totodile. With a team of six Pok\u00e9mon, you help with Lumiose City\u2019s redevelopment plan, bond through exploring and battle to be the very best.<\/p>\n
Lumiose is filled with residents hanging out with their Pok\u00e9mon. You can do the same by sitting in one of the many caf\u00e9s to drink tea together. The sewers and rooftops are also explorable.<\/p>\n
Players encounter wild Pok\u00e9mon through the city\u2019s wild zones. It is important to keep a distance because some choose to run, while others attack.<\/p>\n
The character customization is one of the strongest in the series. There are various hairstyles, clothes, hats and colors to choose from.<\/p>\n
Previous games had a turn-based battle system, but Z-A mixes things up. Pok\u00e9mon can run freely around the area during combat. Players can do this to dodge attacks and must be in position to deliver an effective move.<\/p>\n
At night, the Z-A Royale is in effect. It\u2019s a tournament that allows trainers from around the region to battle on sight, to try to go from rank Z to rank A. The Z-A Royale\u2019s battle is fun, but the main game could have spent more time on it.<\/p>\n
My only gripe is with some of the game\u2019s open world features. The city\u2019s buildings feel like walls. You can\u2019t go inside most of them. The visuals could have been better, but it was not a huge dealbreaker. It would also be nice if the rideable Pok\u00e9mon could help with exploration.<\/p>\n
Mega Evolution from Pok\u00e9mon X and Y makes its triumphant return. Pok\u00e9mon are given new forms that make them stronger in battle. Some forms return from prior entries, but you need to battle these forms to progress through the narrative.<\/p>\n
The story manages to tie up loose ends from Pok\u00e9mon: X and Pok\u00e9mon: Y, while delivering something fresh for newcomers.<\/p>\n
Although far from perfect, Pok\u00e8mon Legends: Z-A is one of the better 3D installments for Pok\u00e8mon. It changes things while maintaining the charm of the series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
