It features 12 songs with genres ranging from pop to soft rock.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was made at the peak of Swift\u2019s popularity and transparency with the public, hence the title. Key influences were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/taylor-swift-and-the-eras-tour-rocks-miami\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eras Tour in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and her engagement to National Football League player Travis Kelce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has received mixed reviews. Fans and critics believe the album is a solid demonstration of Swift\u2019s work but lacks emotional depth and lyrical complexity compared to previous albums like <em>f<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olklore <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<em> e<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vermore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of complex lyricism could stem from post-tour exhaustion but it could be argued that it was an intended feature of the album.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juliana Marin, a West Campus student and a long-time Swift listener, called the album disappointing and underwhelming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, that perspective is important. The success of The Eras Tour stood as a statement of Swift\u2019s influence, earning more than $2 billion. So naturally, her next album was expected to be even better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the criticism, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Life Of A Showgirl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a handful of great songs. One standout is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ko70cExuzZM\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fate of Ophelia<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Originally released as a single, it draws inspiration from the character by the same name from Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the original play, Ophelia\u2019s father dies at the hands of Hamlet. That drives her into madness, leading toward a tragic drowning death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song\u2019s chorus goes: \u201cAll that time I sat alone in my tower, you were just honing your powers, now I can see it all, late one night you dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swift uses Ophelia as a metaphor for her fame and her disillusionment with love, explaining how Kelce broke her free from the madness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The track <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4FUIEcnvT04\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opalite<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses the light-colored stone as a metaphor for clarity in the face of adversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lyrics like: \u201cYou had to make your own sunshine,\u201d explain that the relationship with Kelce had its hurdles, but \u201cnow the sky is opalite.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kendall Campus student Ana Rodriguez noted that \u201cin a more positive light, [she] liked how [the album] was more pop, instead of sad crying music\u2026 you could white girl dance to a lot of these, just bounce and have fun.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is an odd chapter in Swift\u2019s discography; it breaks her established norms. It\u2019s not the most lyrically complex nor the most emotionally charged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many listeners may have wanted a more poetic approach, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Life of a Showgirl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may represent a transition in Swift\u2019s music toward a lighter tone after a plethora of personal hardships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taylor Swift released her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, on Oct. 3.
