Through 16 games, the Miami Dade College women\u2019s basketball team is 10\u20136, including a 4\u20133 record at home and 3\u20132 mark on the road. Despite some uneven play early on, the Lady Sharks are finding their footing, winning six of their last seven games.<\/span><\/p>\n

A big reason for the improvement is the performance of sophomores Jazmyne Bynum and Riana Callihan. Bynum, a combo guard, is averaging 18 points per game and Riana Callihan is snagging 8.3 rebounds and scoring 9\u00a0 points per contest.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the team\u2019s biggest building block this season has been freshman Meredith Venner<\/a>, who is averaging a double-double. She leads the team with 19 points and 11.9 rebounds per game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Venner has scored at least 20 points in seven games this season, including two 30 point performances<\/span>\u2014a 32 point explosion versus Santa Fe College on Dec. 30 and a 31 point performance against Bryant & Stratton College on Jan. 3. The Lady Sharks are 6-1 in those contests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s one of our dominant players \u2014 someone we really need on the floor to make an impact,\u201d Bynum said. \u201cWhen we\u2019re trying to score or get something going, she\u2019s one of the players we look to. She\u2019s very important to what we do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 6-foot-3 center\u2019s basketball journey began long before she truly understood the game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad played basketball, and he taught me everything I know,\u201d said Vennner, who was born in Colombia. \u201cI started playing when I was three years old. Since then, I\u2019ve loved the game. Basketball helped me get through problems back home and eventually brought me to the United States. It\u2019s a blessing. It means so much to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite her passion for the sport, Venner said opportunities in Colombia were limited for women. But she didn\u2019t let that stop her drive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI played for Bogot\u00e1\u2019s team\u2014the capital team\u2014when I was around 15, and I was really dominating the league,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

That success opened doors.\u00a0 She averaged 19.3 points at the 2023 U-17 South American Championship and 11.5 points at the 2024 FIBA U-17 Championship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLittle by little I started growing, learning, and noticing I was different from my teammates and friends,\u201d Venner said. \u201cI knew I was blessed with talent and physical gifts, so I decided to really chase it. I watched WNBA players and thought, \u2018I\u2019m not so different from them. I can do this.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In January of 2024, Venner moved to Orlando to attend the Academy of Central Florida. She was a starter as a junior, before tearing her ACL as a senior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the setback, Susan Summons, the head basketball coach at MDC, continued to\u00a0 recruit her.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven while I was rehabbing, [coach Summons] told me, \u2018Come here. I\u2019m going to help you, I\u2019m going to take care of you, and make you a better player,\u2019 \u201c Venner recalls. \u201cNot many schools will take you when you\u2019re injured, so that meant everything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She spent 10 months rehabbing the injury and now that she is healthy again, Venner is embracing her opportunity at MDC.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCoach [Summons] expects points and rebounds\u2014a double-double every night,\u201d Venner said. \u201cShe wants me to bring energy and be a monster in the game, so I have to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to filling the stat sheet, Venner\u2019s unselfish play and leadership have not gone unnoticed. She is often seen offering words of encouragement to teammates who are struggling on the court.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen teams focus on her scoring, she trusts her teammates and always puts the team first,\u201d Callihan said. \u201cEven through tough calls or foul trouble, she keeps everyone lifted and engaged.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Venner, this year is only the beginning of a larger journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the season, I see myself committing to a Division I high-major university,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to keep growing and using the blessing and talent I have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And beyond college? She\u2019s not limiting her dreams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I can play overseas. Maybe the WNBA\u2014I don\u2019t know, but that\u2019s my dream,\u201d Venner said. \u201cI just know I\u2019m going to keep working and doing everything I can. I believe great things are coming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
