Since 1906, the <\/span>National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)<\/span><\/i>\u2014a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletes in more than 1,281 institutions in North America\u2014has seen many changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For most of its existence, the <\/span>NCAA<\/span><\/i> has faced controversy for restricting the kinds of benefits and monetary compensation that student athletes can receive from schools.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2009, <\/span>O\u2019Bannon v. NCAA<\/span><\/i><\/a> was the first antitrust lawsuit where Ed O\u2019Bannon, a UCLA basketball player, challenged this rule, arguing that the NCAA and its licensing partners were profiting from student-athletes through products like EA Sports video games while players got nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The judge ruled the NCAA\u2019s ban as an unlawful restraint of trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While the case did not immediately create today’s marketplace, it laid the foundation to the NCAA v. Alston\u2014a 2021 Supreme Court case about caps on education\u2010related benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Court\u2019s unanimous antitrust ruling and Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2019s concurrence signaled that broader compensation limits, including name, image and likeness brand deals, were coming to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In July 2021, within days of the Alston decision, the NCAA adopted its interim NIL policy in July of 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

With this, the NCAA <\/span>states<\/span><\/a> that \u201cStudent athletes may receive compensation from third parties <\/span>for use of their name, image and likeness (NIL), such as social media posts, brand appearances <\/span>or promoting products and services. All three NCAA divisions support opportunities for student athletes to pursue NIL consistent with rules that protect fair competition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

That proves that the money was always there; athletes just were not in the revenue line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, NIL deals have blurred the lines between amateur and professional sport and are re\u2010wiring incentives across the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

NCAA data<\/span><\/a> and independent dashboards suggest an average disclosed deal is valued in the low thousands but a median disclosed deal is under 100 dollars, reflecting few large contracts and many micro\u2010deals for the average athlete.<\/span><\/p>\n

NIL collectives and major brands direct six and seven\u2010figure deals to star quarterbacks, elite women\u2019s basketball players and highly marketable local \u201cheroes\u201d, making NIL a visible factor in transfer and recruiting decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the market grows beyond a billion dollars annually, the gap between the \u201chaves\u201d and \u201chave\u2010nots\u201d is likely to widen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the money today is concentrated on specific sports and even those are heavily skewed toward a small number of star athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Football drives the largest share of deals and dollars. One 2024\u201325 snapshot has football <\/span>accounting for roughly 40\u201375 %<\/span><\/a> of all NIL activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s sports as a group remain a smaller part of total profit. But it’s growing much faster <\/span>than men\u2019s sports, with some <\/span>reports estimating women\u2019s<\/span><\/a> NIL revenue growing four to five times faster between 2022 and 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

There needs to be a way to ensure that smaller programs have a chance against the bigger ones. Otherwise, smaller programs will simply lose the financing to compete.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NCAA profits off the backs of many athletes. It\u2019s about time athletes start to get properly compensated for that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
