It stands alongside <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8aulMPhE12g\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillermo Del Toro\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankenstein<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adaptation, which was nominated nine times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainstream blockbusters <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La La Land\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously held the record with 14 nominations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Academy Awards is the oldest entertainment award show. Its first ceremony was held in 1929.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the show\u2019s historically long run, horror movies have taken home less than 50 awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why the sudden shift in the way these flicks are perceived by critics?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, horror films are looked down upon for being \u201ccheap\u201d and lacking artistry. Most are known to opt for lowbrow terror techniques like jumpscares or excessive gore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But high budget productions like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinners <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankenstein <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have reshaped that narrative. They have substance and intention in the way they\u2019re written and have established themselves as pieces of arthouse cinema.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During awards season, action, historical pieces and dramas are typically seen as \u201cOscar bait\u201d. These movies typically garner the most attention from critics and Academy voters, leading them to be seen as the most respectable and distinguished genres.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cBig Five\u201d\u2014Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay\u2014are the most prestigious awards of the night. Wins in these categories signify a massive accomplishment for films.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinners <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has received nominations for four out of the five categories, only missing Best Actress, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frankenstein <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a nominee for two, including Best Screenplay.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both films are nominated as finalists for arguably the biggest award of the night\u2014Best Picture, a feat only eight other horror movies have had, with 1991\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Silence of the Lambs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being the only one to win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first time a horror film was selected for this category was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Exorcist <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1974\u2014that is 45 years after the first Oscar was awarded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the recognition of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinners<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has signified a massive achievement for fright films,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Frankenstein<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not fall behind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remake is the third most nominated film at this year&#8217;s Oscars, tied with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/how-marty-supreme-unites-marginalized-groups-against-capitalism\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marty Supreme<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sentimental Value<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are drama movies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite that, there is room for more appreciation for these films.
