{"id":41303,"date":"2026-02-04T19:27:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T00:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=41303"},"modified":"2026-02-05T02:02:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T07:02:41","slug":"mdc-inches-closer-to-once-again-overseeing-the-tower-theater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/mdc-inches-closer-to-once-again-overseeing-the-tower-theater\/","title":{"rendered":"MDC Inches Closer To Once Again Overseeing The Tower Theater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its inauguration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1926, the Tower Theater has served as a cultural gem in the heart of Little Havana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2002 through 2023, Miami Dade College was entrusted with managing the artistic mecca.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the lights of the iconic art-deco cinema started to dim following the city<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/protestors-fight-to-keep-tower-theater-in-mdcs-hands-this-isnt-the-end\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Miami\u2019s decision to terminate the theater&#8217;s lease contract with MDC, effective Jan. 2, 2023.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Former city Commissioner Joe Carrollo\u2014who championed this decision\u2014argued the facility was not being fully utilized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That ruling sparked community outrage, prompting many residents to gather at the gates of the theater in protest. But the result stood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three years later, MDC is inching closer to returning to Calle Ocho. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Jan. 8, the city Of Miami Commission advanced a resolution to return the management of the historic Tower Theater to the College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/miamifl.iqm2.com\/Citizens\/FileOpen.aspx?Type=14&amp;ID=3685&amp;Inline=True\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sponsored by newly elected mayor Eileen Higgins and District 3 commissioner Rolando Escalona, outlines a 20-year agreement that automatically renews every five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was passed during their first monthly meeting of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m excited about it. Miami Dade [College] has been a wonderful steward of that property,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/retiring-professor-paul-george-missionary-for-miami-history\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul George<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resident historian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/historymiami.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HistoryMiami Museum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who grew up going to the Tower Theater in the 1950s and now guides historical tours in the area every month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George is one of thousands of Miami residents whose life was impacted by the theater\u2019s presence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It just became a centerpiece of that neighborhood. You&#8217;d have gatherings there, sort of like little Christmas party for the kids in the neighborhood,\u201d the historian said. \u201cJerry Parr got his first taste of the secret service at the Tower Theater.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1939, a young Parr visited the Tower Theater with his father to watch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Code of the Secret Service <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starring Ronald Reagan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After seeing the film, the then nine-year-old was smitten by the idea of the government agency and it altered the course of his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1981, Parr was serving in the secret service, directly charged with protecting Reagan, who by then had become president of the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March of that year, Parr is credited with saving Reagan\u2019s life after he pushed him into the presidential limousine after an assasination attempt at the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History has always been tied to the vintage theater. In the 60s, the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cinema<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became one of the first in Florida to offer Spanish subtitles to American movies. It quickly became <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a gathering spot for Cuban exiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When MDC began overseeing the theater\u2014which turns 100 this year\u2014it made significant investments to preserve it while transforming the venue into the epicenter of the Miami Film Festival and its GEMS program, welcoming more than 1.2 million visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Tower Theater was a beacon for cinema, and my favorite venue for the festival. For filmmakers, local filmmakers, student filmmakers, who are able to present their work there, it&#8217;s an honor,\u201d said filmmaker Jonathan Cuartas, who premiered his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/vampire-horror-flick-garnering-accolades-for-sedt-alumni\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debut feature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jonathan-cuartas.com\/feature.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Heart Can\u2019t Beat Unless You Tell It To<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2020 at the theater.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the city started overseeing the theater three years ago, its programming has shifted to more theater-centered productions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miaminewtimes.com\/arts-culture\/city-hands-tower-theater-management-back-to-miami-dade-college-40515200\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miami New Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some local actors are against the decision to return the facility to MDC for fear that their productions will be canceled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in an interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, James Woolley, executive director of the Miami Film Festival, emphasized\u00a0 that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The Tower Theater] will remain a mixed use space. Their productions will still be able to be held in the space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He later added, \u201cMiami Dade College is grateful to the City of Miami for considering the College once again as a potential steward and manager of the historic Tower Theater.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College officials are currently discussing the terms of the agreement with the city manager.
