{"id":41620,"date":"2026-03-17T19:27:47","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T23:27:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/?p=41620"},"modified":"2026-03-18T06:55:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T10:55:01","slug":"photography-comes-with-a-moral-compass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/photography-comes-with-a-moral-compass\/","title":{"rendered":"Photography Comes With A Moral Compass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Photography<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Susan Sontag argues that a photograph is \u201ca neat slice of time,\u201d adding that \u201cto take a photograph is to participate in another person&#8217;s (or thing&#8217;s) mortality, vulnerability, and mutability.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those words capture the weight that comes with being a photographer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photographs that portray the unusual\u2014things never seen before\u2014have long been subject to controversy. Images depicting conflict, poverty, famine, human suffering and sexuality often challenge social norms and disrupt human perception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, the world was not prepared to see <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vulture and the Little Girl (1993),<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taken by Kevin Carter while documenting the civil unrest in South Africa from 1990-1994 as part of the Bang-Bang Club.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The image showed a humanitarian crisis that lacked attention: a starving child collapsed on the ground being stalked by a vulture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carter faced relentless criticism for photographing the devastating scene. An editorial in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/archive\/1994\/04\/14\/were-his-priorities-out-of-focus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Petersburg Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April of 1994 said he &#8220;might just as well be a predator, another vulture on the scene.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The photo illustrates the ethical quagmire photographers constantly face. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The horrors he witnessed, among other things, led to his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/07\/29\/world\/kevin-carter-a-pulitzer-winner-for-sudan-photo-is-dead-at-33.html#:~:text=Kevin%20Carter%2C%20the%20South%20African,died%20of%20carbon%20monoxide%20poisoning.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicide in 1994<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should photographers intervene or document?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The uncomfortable truth is, despite some exceptions, a photographer\u2019s job is to photograph. By doing their work, photographers raise awareness and in turn, create change. History proves this right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Napalm Girl (1972). <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The raw portrayal of a child running in despair after a napalm bomb had burned her clothes off shook everyone to the core by revealing the brutal reality of the Vietnam War.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what ultimately defines an image: the artist\u2019s intent or the audience\u2019s interpretation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This question is relevant in a series of photos by Sally Mann titled: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediate Family (1992)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They were<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticized for having some nude photos of her children. The exhibition was even removed from the Fort Worth museum in Texas as a result of child pornography allegations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Charges were brought against Mann but they were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/09\/24\/nx-s1-5350583\/art-work-sally-mann\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eventually dropped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She said her photos&#8217; intent was to capture her children\u2019s childhood growing up on a Virginia farm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diane Arbus also captured unusual photographs such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identical Twins (1967)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seated Man in Stocking and Bra (1967) <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park (1962).<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, these were widely regarded as exploitative portrayals of \u201cfreaks\u201d for the amusement of the wealthy when in fact, she dedicated her life\u2019s work to intimate and provocative portraiture of ostracized communities to provide others with a glimpse into their humanity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A photographers&#8217; work is often judged by society\u2019s discomfort with their images as opposed to their intentions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By pointing the camera outward, photographers inevitably turn it inward, exposing not only their subjects, but their own moral compass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To hold a camera is to accept responsibility: to capture the living, the vulnerable, the obscure, the misunderstood and the unseen without dehumanizing or stripping them of dignity.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the book On Photography, Susan Sontag argues that a photograph is
