The Miami Dade College baseball team<\/span><\/a> (15-12) is recovering from a five game losing streak in early March after winning their past three games. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Offensively, the Sharks have a .370 team batting average and a .510 slugging percentage. They\u2019ve scored 215 runs in 27 games.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur bats are hot right now,\u201d said catcher Nelson Mompierre, who has three home runs, 28 RBI and is batting .416 this year. \u201cWe\u2019re hitting from top to bottom. We all have a good approach and it\u2019s working out for us.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Several freshman have been producing at the plate. Shortstop Kevin Santiago has 26 RBI and a .526 slugging percentage. Infielder\u2019s Santiago Espinal ( a .447 batting average and a .638 slugging percentage) \u00a0and Raul Cabrera, who has a .500 batting average, have also contributed. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the impressive offensive statistics, Head Coach Danny Price<\/span><\/a> believes the team has room for improvement. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s talent here\u2026we can improve a lot,\u201d Price said. \u201cI expect we\u2019re going to improve, but we haven\u2019t played up to what I thought we\u2019re capable of playing to yet. I think our best baseball is in front of us.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

One weakness in particular, Price said, is pitching. In the Sharks\u2019 27 games this season, they have allowed 141 runs, averaging 4.10 runs allowed per game.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of jobs in the bullpen are up for grabs, and it\u2019s just a matter of if someone really wants those jobs, and steps up to get them,\u201d Price said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sophomore first baseman, Christopher Medina, believes that the team has the ability to go far this season. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone here is like a brother,\u201d said Medina, who has 15 RBI and a .403 batting average for the Sharks this season. \u201cWe all play together and have one goal in mind \u2013 to go to States.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sharks next game is at the baseball field at Kendall Campus, 11011 S.W. 104 st., at 3 p.m. versus Broward College on March 22.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
