Cuban blogger, Yoani S\u00e1nchez, will be speaking at Miami Dade College\u2019s Freedom Tower on April 1. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to Juan Mendieta, MDC director of communications, this will be the first time S\u00e1nchez appears in person in Miami. S\u00e1nchez recently participated in a three-day technology and information seminar in New York; she will visit Washington D.C. before arriving in Miami.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can think of no better venue for this historic conversation in Miami,\u201d said Eduardo J. Padr<\/span>\u00f3<\/span>n,\u00a0<\/span>president of Miami Dade College in a press release. \u201cLike our slogan, Yoani is MDC.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez had been unable to leave Cuba until last month when the island changed its travel policies, allowing Cubans to travel without the need of an exit visa.<\/span><\/p>\n

The blogger has become one of Cuba\u2019s best-known icons mainly through her blog \u201cGeneration Y,\u201d which she launched in 2007. Her blog focuses on political issues within the Cuban community. <\/span><\/p>\n

According to Roberto Rodriguez Tejera, director and host of the TeleMiami segment \u201cLa Diferencia\u201d, S\u00e1nchez is building up a generation of new leaders who are beginning to emerge and are helping to assure Cuba\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n

S\u00e1nchez is a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee. She will be awarded with the Miami Dade College<\/span><\/p>\n

Presidential Medal for championing human rights during her visit. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYoani S\u00e1nchez is extremely important to the Cuban people, such as myself because she<\/span><\/p>\n

portrays the truths about the government and how they violate human rights, \u201dsaid Lesvy Levy, a veterinary medicine major at MDC. \u201cShe is an icon of hope to the Cuban people and speaks on behalf of an entire community living in poverty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
