The 85th annual Academy Awards, kicking off at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24, honor the best and brightest cinematic professionals from across the world. <\/span><\/p>\n

This year is sure to bring about a suspenseful competition as we wait to hear who will be crossing the stage to put their hands on the golden Oscar. <\/span><\/p>\n

Many times, the winners can almost be assumed already by this point in the year after judging the various awards garnered by these films; but, there is always the possibility of an upset. <\/span><\/p>\n

Without any further adieu, here are my selections for some of the key categories. <\/span><\/p>\n

Best Picture:<\/b><\/p>\n

Beasts of the Southern Wild
\n<\/span><\/i>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Zero Dark Thirty
\n<\/span><\/i>Lincoln
\n<\/span><\/i>Les Miserables
\n<\/span><\/i>Life of Pi
\n<\/span><\/i>Amour
\n<\/span><\/i>Django Unchained
\n<\/span><\/i>Argo<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Argo<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Even before Argo started its sweep at awards ceremonies like The Golden Globes, the Screen Actor\u2019s Guild awards and the <\/span>British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, it was my choice for Best Picture. Many were saying it would not take home the Oscar here since Ben Affleck was snubbed as Best Director nomination, but now those very same people have changed their tune after seeing the film\u2019s recent success. Ben Affleck is proving to be quite the talent behind the lens after delivering hits with <\/span>Gone Baby Gone<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>The Town<\/span><\/i>, so it would be nice to see him get some official recognition with a Best Picture win here\u2014even if he was snubbed on the directorial award. <\/span><\/p>\n

Best Director:<\/b><\/p>\n

David O. Russell, <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Ang Lee, <\/span>Life of Pi
\n<\/span><\/i>Steven Spielberg, <\/span>Lincoln
\n<\/span><\/i>Michael Haneke, <\/span>Amour
\n<\/span><\/i>Benh Zeitlin,<\/span> Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Steven Spielberg <\/span><\/p>\n

I would love to pick Ben Affleck here but, once again, he was unfairly left out. I would even pick Quentin Tarantino here, but he was also left off the list despite having a huge hand in <\/span>Django Unchained<\/span><\/i>. Since I can\u2019t pick my top two choices, I\u2019m going to have to go with Steven Spielberg here. Given the fact that <\/span>Lincoln <\/span><\/i>was so highly regarded, and the inability to choose Affleck, and the fact that he is Spielberg after all, makes him my top choice for the directorial award. <\/span><\/p>\n

Actor In A Leading Role:<\/b><\/p>\n

Daniel Day Lewis, <\/span>Lincoln
\n<\/span><\/i>Denzel Washington, <\/span>Flight
\n<\/span><\/i>Hugh Jackman, <\/span>Les Miserables
\n<\/span><\/i>Bradley Cooper, <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Joaquin Phoenix, <\/span>The Master<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Daniel Day Lewis<\/span><\/p>\n

Hard to imagine the Oscar going anywhere else here. Daniel Day Lewis already has two Academy Awards for best actor: one from <\/span>My Left Foot <\/span><\/i>in 1990 and another for <\/span>There Will Be Blood <\/span><\/i>in 2008. Factor in that <\/span>Lincoln<\/span><\/i> had once been widely considered frontrunner for best Picture, and that Lewis was playing the role of one of the most popular figures from U.S. history and I think we\u2019ll see Lewis taking home his third statue. <\/span><\/p>\n

Actress In A Leading Role:<\/b><\/p>\n

Naomi Watts, <\/span>The Impossible
\n<\/span><\/i>Jessica Chastain, <\/span>Zero Dark Thirty
\n<\/span><\/i>Jennifer Lawrence, <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Emmanuelle Riva, <\/span>Amour
\n<\/span><\/i>Quvenzhan\u00e9 Wallis, <\/span>Beasts of the Southern Wild<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My Pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Jennifer Lawrence<\/span><\/p>\n

It seems Emmanuelle Riva has slowly taken the lead in the race for top actress after some recent wins, most recently at BAFTA, but I\u2019m still picking Jennifer Lawrence as my choice here. Her performance was top-notch in the somewhat low-key <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook<\/span><\/i>, one of my favorite flicks of the year. Lawrence is also no stranger to the competition, having already been nominated in 2010 for Winter\u2019s Bone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Actor in a Supporting Role:<\/b><\/p>\n

Christoph Waltz, <\/span>Django Unchained
\n<\/span><\/i>Philip Seymour Hoffman, <\/span>The Master
\n<\/span><\/i>Robert De Niro, <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Alan Arkin, <\/span>Argo
\n<\/span><\/i>Tommy Lee Jones, <\/span>Lincoln<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Cristoph Waltz<\/span><\/p>\n

Waltz is easily my choice here. He was great in Tarantino\u2019s <\/span>Inglourious Basterds<\/span><\/i>, and that bagged him an Oscar in 2010; and I feel he may have been even better in <\/span>Django.<\/span><\/i> It appears he has a great chemistry with Tarantino in churning out these performances, and although he is fairly new to American audiences, I think we\u2019ll be seeing a lot of Waltz in the years to come. <\/span><\/p>\n

Actress in a Leading Role:<\/b><\/p>\n

Sally Field, <\/span>Lincoln
\n<\/span><\/i>Anne Hathaway, <\/span>Les Miserables
\n<\/span><\/i>Jacki Weaver, <\/span>Silver Linings Playbook
\n<\/span><\/i>Helen Hunt, <\/span>The Sessions
\n<\/span><\/i>Amy Adams, <\/span>The Master<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My pick:<\/span><\/p>\n

Anne Hathaway<\/span><\/p>\n

One reason I dislike the Academy Awards is over the politics that sometimes surround choices. That, and the fact that other awards seem to dictate who will take what award. That said, Hathaway is largely considered the frontrunner here and it\u2019s been discussed that the Academy won\u2019t want to give Sally Field a third Oscar on only her third nomination. I really like Hathaway as an actress however, I just prefered her as Catwoman.<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Original Screenplay:<\/b><\/p>\n

I have to give it up to my favorite film of the year here. <\/span>Django<\/span><\/i> was a sublimely fun movie that I could watch again and again. I love Tarantino\u2019s writing and I think he somehow, despite the fact his films are all homages to older films, he still manages to deliver something original with everything he releases.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
