{"id":4900,"date":"2016-04-01T19:24:01","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T23:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/?p=4900"},"modified":"2021-08-13T13:41:38","modified_gmt":"2021-08-13T17:41:38","slug":"reporter-students-selected-for-national-multimedia-journalism-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mdcthereporter.com\/staging\/8357\/reporter-students-selected-for-national-multimedia-journalism-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Reporter Students Selected For National Multimedia Journalism Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three journalism students from<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Reporter <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been selected to participate in multimedia projects run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">National Association of Hispanic Journalists<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nicolette Perdomo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who serves as the paper\u2019s editor-in-chief, was picked for the NAHJ 2016 Student Project!, which will take place at the organization&#8217;s national convention in Washington, D.C. from Aug. 3 through Aug. 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Daniela Molina<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Mar<\/b><b>\u00ed<\/b><b>a Vizca<\/b><b>\u00ed<\/b><b>no<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who serve as news writers for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, were selected for the NAHJ 2016 Student Project at Hispanicize in Miami from April 5 through April 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project offers the students a week-long training in multimedia journalism. Students will report for the convention website, The Latino Reporter Digital, creating a digital newspaper, a television newscast and radio programs and packages.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perdomo, 20, is studying mass communications\/journalism in the Honors College at Kendall Campus. As editor-in-chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r, she oversees a staff of about 60 students. She assigns, edits and writes for the news and briefing section. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her tenure at the paper, Perdomo has written articles ranging from the tragic story of two Miami Dade College students killed in a car accident, a Cuban dissident arrested in his homeland, and a story about the search for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdcthereporter.com\/search-for-man-who-robbed-and-abducted-woman-at-kendall-campus-continues\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">a man who robbed and temporarily abducted a woman at gunpoint while on campus<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing selected for the NAHJ Student Project is not only an honor for me, but also for my family,\u201d Perdomo said. \u201cMy grandparents have always wanted me to stay close to my Hispanic culture and this opportunity will allow me to engage with the Hispanic community on a national level.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molina, 21, is one of the paper\u2019s main news writers. Her area of concentration is the crime beat. In addition, she has shown versatility, writing feature stories and articles for the forum and A\\E sections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matanzas, Cuba, Molina, who is currently a journalism student at North Campus, arrived in the United States when she was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a year old after her mother, Jamila Molina, won the Cuban lottery. She struggled with English, taking ESOL classes deep into her elementary schooling but eventually adapted. Her passion for journalism was ignited at Hialeah Senior High School where she served as the editor-in-chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Record<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the school\u2019s paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter seeing my name in the newspaper that is when I realized that I wanted to continue this as a career,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molina aspires to work as a radio reporter for a news organization in the English market and as a print journalist covering crime at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vizca<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no, 19, is a freshman at the North Campus and at MDC-West. She writes news stories and opinion pieces for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reporter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Vizca<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no, a 2015 graduate of Ronald W. Reagan Senior High School, arrived in the United States four years ago. She aspires to work as an investigative journalist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like journalism for the public service it provides,\u201d Vizca<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no said. \u201cI strongly believe to function as a society, journalists are key especially coming from Venezuela where the
